I don't know...it's just so worrying when they're little and can't really verbalize their pain. But it's also a good point that this way they won't miss so much school when older. That's the thing though, when do you rule out giving antibiotics? After all, aren't we at the mercy of doctors? Best I can do is getting a second opinion (yet another doctor). I've found occasionally just asking the doctor 'are you sure it is bacterial' will result in a more thought out plan - eg a prescription for antibiotics if it hasn't gone in X days (when a virus would be on the mend) etc. Sometimes they are just throwing everything they can at it just in case (and to make you feel like you are doing something!)

There's a school of thought which says it's better little ones catch all the illnesses going whilst they're at nursery school, that way they'll develop immunity at an earlier age and won't miss so much school when they're older. I don't think you can keep them in a bubble, if they're going to catch it, they'll catch it, maybe best to get it over with when they're younger? ETA: I hope your son is better soon, and I think strep throat and ear infections are all part of life's rich tapestry and are quite usual, wherever you are - just make sure antibiotics are only given when necessary. edited by simpleasabc on 02/04/2011

Thank you all very much. They have done a swab test and are waiting for the results. Doc says it looks like bacterial infection. Worrying situation really. Son has been coming down with all sorts of infections ever since he joined nursery three months ago. I can't continue giving him antibiotics as it definitely affects his system in the long run. But I can't pull him out of nursery due to current personal circumstances. Do kids develop immunity over time? Or should I take heed and pull him out of nursery? yes they get bugs for a while when they first start nursery (or school); lots of these bugs don't actually need antibiotics so do double check each time with the doctor that they are sure it is bacterial (great that City are checking) as a virus won't respond to antibiotics; and yes they develop immunity..... they just give you lots to worry about while they develop it!

Yes,nurseries will make your child sick. My DS joined a nursery last year Sept and the first four months was constant sickness. Flu,colds, fevers etc. He is better now but always has a runny nose now. You cant win it seems.

Appletiser, tylenol suppositories work better for me too. Brufen in particular has been useless.

City - is a South African Hospital - so you know they are good! :) Regarding a Pediatrician I delivered my son at City and we have been seeing the pediatrician Dr Syed Rais Ahmed since - btw he also sees patients at Kids First Medical center. He has a very gentle freindly manner with children, he takes the time to answer all my questions, tries to accomadate all my requests (especially with regard to splitting vaccines) and most importantly - takes the time to do thorough examinations I took my son to a pediatrician two blocks away when he wasnt well - cos i didnt have my car or car seat - big mistake - cos this dude told me - maybe he is coming down with something - by listening only to my descriptions but not actually examining my son. The next day - I visited Dr Ahmed and he advised that my son had a strep throat, maybe cos he actually examined him!

fevers are usually worse at night. I used to use voltaren suppositories if calpol did not work....they always brought down a fever and enabled us to get some food into them. Tylenol or voltaren suppositories are better than the calpol ones imho. Hope your LO feels better soon,

Very good. I have taken my son and the doctor attended within 5 minutes. He was kind, gentle and my son liked him immediately. They also called 2 days later to checkup on his condition,

ummissa, my kids had fevers for not very much (but then we may have different classifications as I am not sure I would count strep throat or an ear infection as particularly serious); certainly didn't always need antibiotics for them. As a mother, I think you can usually tell when something is really not right; if it's only a fever, I wouldn't worry too much; if the child is ill in himself that is when to worry. Anyway, good luck, hope it turns out to be not much :)

Don't worry. I am sure he is in safe hands. The hospital in general seems good, we just slipped through the net that night, I reckon.

Thank you VP. Doesn't a fever in children usually mean something serious? My son is two and every time he had fever it turned out to be something serious (strep throat, ear infection) and ended up taking antibiotics. So I'm really worried right now.

Thank you guinness. I called them and they said a general doctor will see him and if necessary they will phone the pediatrician on call, that's why I had to come and ask here if they're any good. My husband is there already with my son now so we'll see. If I may ask you, Who do you see regularly for your children at City? I'm thinking of switching doctors as I'm not happy with my current one (different hospital). Anyone suggesting a good pediatrician at City is most welcome please. Thanks.

Yes go to City. They always have a pediatrician on staff and I've brought my kids there a ton.
