I came across this forum and I know it's kinda late to respond to it but can't help but share my husband's experience with Xclusive Sea School as they did AMAZING! to say the least. We've been fancying yacht trips on weekends and we've thought it would be neat if he could navigate it himself so he decided to take the two-day power boat training. I've never seen him so ecstatic about driving a boat! Their service was great and looked well after him on training. They are based in Dubai Marina.

My DH recently taught RYA Powerboat 1 and Powerboat 2 here in Dubai but has now moved on to pastures new. If you are someone who has absolutely no idea of what you are doing on a boat, it is not always advisable to go straight to P.B. 2 and miss out P.B. 1 My DH would always assess someone and advise them whether or not they needed to start from scratch. True, for someone who has no idea at all, it would be best to do both. I've been around boats for years, so it wasn't necessary for me.

Yes, definitely rental companies will require some kind of license I guess. But as far as I can find now, rental companies always provide the captain... I’ll keep looking, hopefully I’ll find something else :)

I don't own a boat, but we go out on a friends boat, so obviously for everyone driving it, they want to make sure they know what they're doing. I suspect to actually rent a boat, you would have to have a license otherwise you're not going to be insured, there's no way they're going to hire a craft to anyone with zero experience. Driving a boat is pretty easy, it's all the other bits that you need to be ware of.

Thanks so much :) Me, I don’t have any clue about all this and would love to do this kind of course if we’re serious about this. My OH used to drive a boat, so I guess he does have that basic knowledge. Can I ask you, do you have a boat? Or rent one? We’re interested in buying one, but I would love to rent a few times before actually buying.

Agree with Chocs01 a basic course is a really good idea. I assume it will give you some basic knowledge on how to drive and care for your boat along with a bit of mechanical basics. Can be really daunting getting out on the water with nobody else to assist otherwise - fish out of water feeling! Yup, mooring to buoys, mooring to jetty, basic handling, emergency stops, man over board, basic knots and their uses, safety equipment and how to use it. One mistake I see so many people is using speed to try and get themselves out of situations, it doesn't work, everything should be done dead slow, literally just engaging the gear and that's it. You'd be amazed at how much you simply use the wind to push you about. I found it extremely useful.

YET....being the key word, they are going to enforce it at some point. It's always worth having anyway as you can then hire boats elsewhere without any issues. I think everyone should at least do a basic boat handling course, as I see sooo many people on the water who just don't have a clue. You don't really need to do Power boat 1 as virtually everything is covered in Power boat 2. It gives you all the basics, launching, how to moor and handle the boat, basic laws of the water ways - very important as to who has right of way, being out in bad conditions, basic use of charts and GPS. Actually well worth doing. We did it because it's necessary for who we go out with, they only let certified people use the boat and the insurane only covers people with a valid license. edited by Chocs01 on 17/04/2011

This is one thing that you do not need in Dubai. You need to register the boat and have the transponder fitted now but no need for any licence yet.

What course do you want to do? We recently did the power boat 2 with JPS marine at the Dubai Creek and Yacht club. It's about 2,000 Dhs and you do it over 2 days. It;s the RYA course.
