you ladies take your time to train your babies. We did that around his first birthday. the only sign i needed beside that he sits down, is that he can say peeeee, pooooo ,or any other sound that I can assign to the process. he needed 3 days and never put a diaper on again. it just goes to show that every baby is different. I count "toilet trained" as kiddo being able to go all by itself, not me chasing after it with a potty or instigating anything. I read the Gina Ford book and a good few others. Ha ha bloomin' ha! DD showed all the signs (apparently) at 26 months but would not be told (/sigh). We started again in earnest at 30 months and it took over a year for her to be consistently dry day and night and to self-toilet - and I pulled out all the tricks there were!

I'll second Gina Ford's book, we used it for both our boys and it really helped. One was dry at 28 months and the second at 2 1/2 yrs old. I would also suggest you invest in a potette (you can find them in Mothercare): foldable travel potty with disposable plastic linings that you just throw away. It's been a life saver and you little one can "go" anywhere and at any time. Best of luck.

My DD was ready according to the books at about 22 month and she was showing signs of being ready but after a few days she was getting frustrated at not getting to the potty on time and we went on holiday so we put nappies back on, at about 25 months she woke up one morning, said no nappy Mummy, panties and since then we have been virtually dry. Accidents happen when we are out and about as she hates using the big toilets even with an insert to make the hole smaller but she is getting better. She loved it when I told her stories about potty training, she also gets a smiley sticker when she goes in the potty. You can get 'noisy' potty's in the Babyshop, ours has been banished upstairs as I cannot stand the music it plays.

Try the Gina Ford book on how to train in one week. It has all the signs to look for in your child. My DD was just over 2 when we started with her but in hindsight she was nowhere near ready and it took AGES before she was totally dry. I started it because everyone in my mothers group was doing it and I thought I should. Each child is different though. My DS is almost three and we are going through it at the moment. Almost from the first day he caught on and it has been much much easier.
