How to get a Dubai Drivers Licence

Have done a search but only found threads on Doha and AD licences.

I am wondering what the process is for a wife who is not working to get a driver's licence in Dubai?

Does all the processing happen at the RTA?
Assume you need to have your visa and ID card in place first?
Do I need a copy of my passport as well and extra passport photo's or do they take your picture at the RTA?
Do I take my original Australian driver's licence with me to the RTA?
Do I need to get a NOC in Arabic from my husband? How do I go about this - finding the wording, getting it written up?
Do I need to do an eye test and if so is it done at the RTA like we do in Australia?

So many questions - sorry - is there anything else I need to know or prepare?

Many thanks in advance... Not looking forward to dragging kids around in the heat of August to get this done, so want to get it right first time.

Depends on your passport. Heard that Canadians have to have driving lessons even if they have a drivers license. Upstairs at union co op at Safa park very easy. Don't forget your letter either from DH or work to say they allow u to drive...LOL

I had the NOC from my husband plus all copies of his visa, passport etc and there was still something they asked him to sign. Can't remember what it was, but remember being glad he had come with me so I didn't have to make a second trip. It was at the same RTA place as mentioned below near MOE. This was last November. Also the NOC can be in English, does not need to be in Arabic. Mine was also Australian licence

When I got mine done, down by G&D park, I first went into this like portacabin where the typing was done I then had an eye test in there too, then walked over to the main building to get the actual licence. Dont know if that has changed now and you need to go to an opticians seperately... edited by emlsnre on 26/07/2011

BMAP - CP is spot on with her advice. If you get there early you will be the only person there! Make sure you take a passport photo to the opticians too.

Stop worrying BMAP - it is easy! Get an eye test done in an opticians, tell them it is for your driving licence. Go to the Burr Dubai Police HQ by the Gold and Diamond Park on the corner opposite MoE. As you enter go into the typing office on the left, they will type your application etc Your DH needs to be with you, or write you an NOC (take of copy of his docs if he does this), you also need 2 more passport size photos, photocopy of your passport and visa page (take original with you too just in case), money AED 410 for licence plus typing fee (AED40 ish), original driving licence too naturally. Once everything is typed go to the room where they check the paperwork and issue the licence, the guy on the desk at the back will give you a number - then you just wait. If you can bear to go early it won't take long, maybe 30 minutes! It is simple, believe me! Just one other thing double check they have issued it for 10 years, they made a mistake on mine and only gave me 6 months!
