My UAE drivers license has expired last month, I am moving back to Dubai in a few weeks, can i automatically renew it ( I no longer have a valid license for any country) or will they make me go to driving school - otherwise i will sit the test in the US first before travelling - Does anyone know??

you can renew it as long as you have a valid residency visa for the UAe

You can renew your driving license in a jiffy at RTA office...I just renewd mine last month...waited for 20 min and came out with new license. There might be a penalty but that is if the license has expired for more than a month. with in a month..no fines....

I think you can. Mine expired 2 years back, I transfered my visa, then I renewed my driving license 2 months back with no problems. As long as you had a license & a new visa, it should be fine I guess. My aunt went to Canada for 3 yrs, when she came back on new residency she was also able to renew her driving license with no problems & they didnt ask for her Canadian driving license. edited by wickedangel_78 on 04/08/2011

I will be in a similar situation when mine expires and I've been told by someone who's just done it that they do *not* need to see your original home license when renewing your UAE license. That said, I agree that it's always better to be on the safe side! Rules change...and sometimes seem to vary by the minute.

Thanks for the advise - think I will go and get the US license first just to be on the Safe side!!

I would get the US license before returning. It might save a bunch of hassle here and won't be that hard to do there. If you are holding a US licence you should not have to go thru driving school. I would first get my visa issued/renewed, and then simply renew the licence under the new visa; perhaps a small fine will be issued.

You'll need to contact the RTA or the traffic police directly to get an answer. Chances are you're the only person here who's ever found themselves in that particular situation. Purely as a guess, though, I would have thought that as the licence has only been expired for a short time, you can probably get away with a standard renewal. But that *is* just a guess.
