You'll be charged 20dh for *every day* that you don't have it. Not that they have found a way for us to use it, mind you, but it could get quite expensive as the UAE introduces yet another way for expats to spend their money.

And when you have to pay the fine of dhs1000? When you renew your residence visa? I'm still planning to wait until 2013 to get the card... (ok, submitted the application in 2008 but never received the appointment time).

Well if the maximum they can fine is 1,000 Dhs, many people still aren't going to bother. Depends on how much people want to part with $300USD - which would equate to four massages, half a pair of Jimmy Choos, or a dinner out to a nice restaurant, including wine. True, but I object to being forced to have something which has zero use to me and can't even be used as a valid for of identification. The police don't even accept them. True! The only ones who will are DHL - and then, reluctantly!!!

It reads as though the fines are only for people who already have them and are late re-registering them. The last I read, was that people could just get the ID when they renewed their visa if this has to be done before 2013. It's just another way to get money out of people, because most now realise that these ID cards are absolutely useless. "Expatriates and Emiratis will be fined Dh20 for each day they do not possess an Emirates ID card from mid-October." That seems to me to be anyone who does not possess an Emirates ID card, not just anyone who needs to reregister. It was on the front page of the National today, which seemed to indicate it was a major change. You are right, though, it isn't very clearly written. And I agree it is a money-making scheme and employment project for underworked Emiratis. edited by guinness on 22/08/2011

Does anybody know the nearest office to Media City to get this started? Also how long does it take? There is a government office in Al Barsha. I've been there twice (before summer and people going on vacation) and it wasn't crowded. I didn't do the paperwork as it was done for me, but it seemed that things were running smoothly.

AFAICT, it's nothing to do with the employer. My husband told his employers that they needed ID cards as they didn't know about it (they are mostly ex-pats there). My husband only knew about it thanks to me reading about it on "the Expat Woman", as he calls everyone on the forum ;)

I thought the June deadline was only for locals and for everyone else it could wait until visa renewal? Is this a new set of rules? That's also my understanding! The article doesn't mention deadlines ... http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/dh20-a-day-fine-for-not-having-an-emirates-id-card ABU DHABI // Expatriates and Emiratis will be fined Dh20 for each day they do not possess an Emirates ID card from mid-October. Residents will be penalised every day up to a total of Dh1,000. Fines will also be imposed for delays in renewing the cards 30 days after they expire and delays in reporting data changes 30 days after the change occurs. New fees for extra registration services were also outlined in Cabinet decision No 25 for 2011, which was published on Thursday. A mobile registration card for members of a single family will cost Dh1,000 while an expedited service, which allows patrons to apply for or renew a card without an appointment, will cost Dh150. The disabled will be exempt from paying registration fees, as will those who are part of the social Daman programme, although they will be required to pay for extras and fines.
