how do you treat it? I'm pretty sure it's viral, not bacterial, so anti-biotics wont work :(. my throat is killing me and Im losing my voice, i can feel the thick phlegm strangling my voice box :(. My husbands company changed our insurance to emergencies only, so do you think they'd cover me for going to the Dr with this?

Hi, I've just read your post about having Laryngitis and would like to add something which might give a helping advice to you. I've had Rhinopharygitis since last week and been to the Doctor where he confirmed it's viral and antibiotics would not take any effect. The symptoms are mentioned on (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_cold) and the ones I had were runny nose, severe red sore throat, headaches, slight fever every now and then, coughing (which only appeared after a few days of taking medication) and pressure around the left side of the face due to sinus. Now, the Doctor prescribed me a Nasal Spray to decrease the congestion in the nose, Orofar tablets to reduce the soarness of the throat, Clarinase tablets to reduce the runny nose and another med (can't remember the name) where it was to reduce the inflammation in the throat. After taking these for 5 days, visited the Doctor again as he had stated I would either get better or worse which in fact, I got worse so he prescribed me herbal cough syrup (forgot the name) because I only had coughs which would keep me awake all night. After all this, I still have a slight runny nose and have lost my voice as well with phlem so the Doctor prescribed me another type of nasal spray to use for 1 month (to decrease the inflammation of the flesh inside) and a sea salt solution to cleanse the nose thoroughly for 1 week. The best way to take care is to have warm fluids as much as you can, stay as warm as possible, avoid the cold air hitting your face (cover up the nose and chest when you go outside) and sleep with the heater on if your room gets cold. Best to visit a Doctor specialised in ear, throat and nose. I hope this helps and wish you a speedy recovery! P.S. Try to keep away from perfumes, flowers, any thing with a lovely perfumery scent. edited by Teeni on 24/01/2012

check, but insurance for emergency only should cover getting ill and being able to see a Dr...just won't cover you for routine health check ups. Worth a look? Also because of your depression recently it can reflect as well on your general physical health, becoming run down and leaving you open to infection. And green phlegm really sounds like an infection to me.

I dont think I've been talking much at all actually as i've been quite depressed and when I get like that I dont talk. I don't have fever, I have a runny nose and thick greeen phlegm when I cough (sorry!). I'm kind of hoping it's bacterial so I can get anti-biotics! I'm no expert but in my experience, but green phlegm usually means a respiratory infection. You could just go to a pharmacy and see what they suggest.

Most cases of laryngitis are over use of the voice box, so first off STOP TALKING!!! Common causes are viruses, but it can also be a bacterial infection, so maybe a short course of anit-biotics wouldn't hurt if it doesn't clear up. If you have a low fever, coughing, runny nose, congestion etc then it's more likely to be a virus. You need to drink lots and lots of water and warm fluids, take some pain killers, avoid smoking or smoky places and drinking alcohol. I suffer bouts of this several times a year and it's a total pain. Just rest the voice.
