My dad is on some strong pain killers (after treatment of cancer) and we are planning our return to Dubai soon. Is this the correct list of banned and controlled drugs?
http://www.uaeinteract.com/travel/drug.asp

How do I know which drug is banned and which is controlled? I'm guessing the banned drugs cannot be bought into UAE even with a prescription and the controlled drugs are allowed as long as we have prescription?
What about fentanyl patch (duragesic)? There's some conflicting information about it being banned or not online.

Thanks.

Thank you all. I'll contact the UAE embassy here and see what they say.

my husband and i regularly travelled back and forth between the UK and here - carrying liquid chemo, fentanyl patches and morphine - the only thing i ever had with me was a letter from the oncology dept of the hospital saying what we had with us and his personal details. never had any bother at all, carried it in our hand luggage and showed the letter without any issues whatsoever. good luck. I'm sure everything would be fine if OP's Dad did that, however with cases like this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/southern_counties/4500665.stm it is better to be safe and do the right thing.

Tattie Bogle is right. You will need the most recent prescription notarized and attested by the UAE embassy in your country before your dad travels. I jjust saw one article which said "If treatment was undertaken outside UAE, one must carry both a doctor’s prescription as well as detailed medical report, both of which should be suitably attested." Perhaps you can give the UAE embassy in your country a call before you travel just to make sure. Fentanyl is a narcotic drug. Be sure to bring a narcotic rx along with all other documents. Don't forget to ask how many month's worth of supply your dad can bring. Check out the UAE's MOH website: http://www.moh.gov.ae/en/Pages/default.aspx. Good luck!

Hi TT, Technically what you are supposed to do is not just carry the prescription, but have it attested by the UAE Embassy in your home country before you travel with it. With such serious medication, this would be the best way of ensuring that you are doing the right thing, they will also have the most up to date information on which drugs should be on the list. HTH.
