DH tells me that WhatsApp requires the SMS functionality of a phone in order to register and authenticate the first time you use it, and since iPads can't send or receive SMS, that's why it's not officially supported.
However, if you have an iPhone, you can get WhatsApp onto your iPad *without* needing to jailbreak (and no, the iPad does *not* need to have a SIM, because WhatsApp works just fine over wifi once it's been initially registered). Just follow the instructions here:

You can transfer whatsapp on to your ipad, but from what i know you need a mac computer to do so.
If you google it, the first few hits and forums will give you step by step instructions.
It also needs to be jail broken and you can do it through Cydia
I think you can also do it on your Mac and sync it to the IPad

Looks like English yet..... ;)
Sorry I was typing too fast. Even with a sim I don't think it will work. It wont sync with Ipad as it isn't officially available yet but is with some 3G android tablets
You have to do it via other channels or go through I Tunes and funbox
There are Whatsapp apps for Ipad available through the ipad app thingy mebob

Not all ipads have sim card capability - and the ones that do are more expensive (obviously) - you would also need a package, akin to your iphone / BB / Samsung whatever smarter-than-me phone you have.
I don't understand how it can be done either. I suppose you probably need a SIM card in your Ipad. If no one else has an answer for you, I can ask my DH tonight.
