Hi guys,

So I am moving to Dubai end of August. What do I do with my phone?? I have rolling monthly UK contract with Orange I can cancel anytime but obviously will need some kind of phone when I get there so dont want to cancel and be left with nothing. I currently have an iphone 4 but would maybe like to upgrade but not that bothered.

What do I need to get..new phone? sim card? phone unlocked?

options would be helpful

thanks in advance

Sophie

I was vodafone when I first landed and my phone had to be unlocked at the time.

Orange usually lock their phones. It was years ago but I had to get mine unlocked when I moved here

I bought a sim card a couple weeks ago. I was informed that its valid for 3 months as a tourist, then I suppose I can get it converted to long term use once I have my residency. I bought mine in arrivals at T3. Du had no credit so I had to walk across to the flower stall as they sell credit top up there. You can also purchase top up for data if you require.

For a contract phone - unless the rules have changed - you need proof of salary (or someone with proof of salary to put the contract in your name). As a housewife I couldn't get a contract so we just put it in DH's name instead.

UAE has 2 providers, Etisalat and DU. I think they even have a DU counter in the arrivals terminal (terminal 1). Here you have to register your number with your passport when you buy the sim card, so might take a bit of time and maybe not something you want to do when you have just arrived. But it is an option. And you would need an unlocked phone. Once you have your visa you can opt for a contract with a phone, but you can't do that without a visa a believe and I think also a valid local credit card.

Is your phone locked to Orange? If it's not locked then all you need to do is get a new SIM card when you arrive.
