Does anyone know how much you can save by getting a large water dispenser? I have been here for nearly 2 years and we are still buying 1.5l bottle of masafi. Is it really that much difference in cost if you buy a water dispenser?

If you don't mind not having the instant hot/cold features and want to save on electricity, you can get one of those ceramic water crock dispensers from C4 for 30Dhs or so (bought mine long ago, price may have changed) for the large 4-5 gallons bottles that you can leave on the counter. It's a lot cheaper and you can wash your dispenser if you ever feel the need. It is cost effective and environmentally "friendlier" :)

Buying 1.5l bottles generates a lot of waste - very few of these bottles get recycled here and they end up in a dump site in the desert, so it is very unsustainable. Not to mention the plastic used in every bottle. I get reusable Oasis bottles deliver to my flat. AED9 per bottle. It is the most environmentl friendly option for bottled water, it is cheaper and convenient. Hygiene is perfectly fine. We have a very simple water dispenser bought in Lulu supermarket, it is not a water cooler (we do not like cold water) but it costs AED20. It is a bowl where the water drains on and its has a tap to pour your glasses of water.

The bigger bottles for the machine will absolutely be much cheaper than buying 1.5l bottles - but IMHO the hygiene aspect of those large refilled bottles is dubious, not just the refilling and handling (and sitting in the sun) but even at home, how many people actually clean their dispensers thoroughly? So my advice is to stay with the 1.5l and get Earlybird delivery!

The big 'blue' bottles of water that get delivered to your home weekly are about 47 fils a litre on average. How much are the 1.5 litre bottles? ETA I was not speaking of the Masafi bottles that you can "recycle" - those are 80 fils a litre edited by CanadianInDXB on 19/03/2011

I don't think we paid as much as that for our cooler. No deposit needed for Masafi water. It costs 12 AED per bottle. Rather than cost the biggest selling point is convenience I think - no lugging lots of bottles back from the supermarket and it's always chilled. Arguably it's better for the environment too.

Well, to begin...the water dispenser is around 400 dirham. To subscribe with Oasis, there is deposit of 25 dirham per bottle. Buying coupon book is 90 dirham per booklet, which is you'll be paying 9 dirham each bottle. Masafi water is 11 dirham if I'm not mistaken. On average family of 4 kids & 3 adult we used up to 3 bottle maximum weekly.

A water dispenser costs about 400 dhs and a 5 gallon bottle costs 9 dhs. I'll leave you to do the math - it's not my finest point.
