my husband just used a gift voucher he had received to have a taylor-made shirt - he is one of these guys who has everything but had never had the experience of having a shirt made exactly to measure. i think the cost was AED450.- he chose the fabric, the style and after a couple of fitting session just came home parading his brand new shirt made 'just for him' - I thought it was a nice idea of a gift that still let him chose his own shirt.

His boss is giving him a Dunhill laptop bag worth AED 2600 from Dubai Mall. Some of my colleagues are giving him chocolates and a mug and since he just approved my annual bonus worth 3 times of my salary yesterday I think it's okay to give a gift on his 40th Birthday, no? by the way the cake and balloons are from the company, I am just the one buiying it. still wrong? with that bonus, you better get a nice "thank you" gift in return! haha

A nice Orchid in a nice pot is a decent and classy B-day gift. My boss loved it and still has it. Also a cake with his name would be nice to accompany the orchid as it is a 40th b-day. I agree. This is sweet and decent. Thanks N :-)

who gives their boss a present when leaving the company, all I've ever given my bosses is a nice smile then 2 fingers behind their backs on the way out lol Sometimes one has a perfect job and a great boss, but has to leave for a number of reasons other than not being happy with the job, such as for example, joining DH who has been assigned to the UAE...

I find it a bit weird. It would be ok if it's a bunch of staff clubbing together to buy something, but individually? A no in my book as well. In fact I've never come across that.

I read somewhere that the only time you can give an expensive gift to your boss is a good-bye gift when you resign from your position and leave the company. I agree, many companies have a policy in place about gifts and you should check this out with yours. Probably a more appropriate gift would be a joint gift from everyone in the office; a personal gift, except a very small one, doesn't seem appropriate. who gives their boss a present when leaving the company, all I've ever given my bosses is a nice smile then 2 fingers behind their backs on the way out lol

i think it's inappropriate. Certain colleagues at work always give my boss presents and it makes him (and me) cringe. Not to us. Thanks for your opinion though.;) Is that what's contributing to your previous comment on another thread? :-P My reply to this thread might be out of the topic and im sure won’t help the OP. But you know what, I notice in UAE there so many affairs going on especially at work places!!! My bosses tried to get on me for years but I said to them “sorry but I ain’t buying your Bull sh3t!!’ Just outrageous! :\: LOOOOLLLL GM but NO!!!!

Many larger companies do not allow employees to buy gifts for their "superiors", as it could be seen as a bribe. Make sure your company doesn't have such a policy. In any case, I don't think it's appropriate to buy gifts for your manager, espcially one of that calibre, but that's just my opinion which you didn't ask for :) No issues about giving gifts to managers. I received alot of gifts from him and wife already (earrings, bracelets, perfumes, etc) and I should know as we are working long time already. Thanks for your opinion though MF :) Yes but that is what BOSSES DO - they give presents down the chain as it were as a Thank You for your work or as a courtesy. In my experience it is not expected or even wanted in the other direction to the extent of an expensive present. Sorry just mo.

Sorry, hadn't read the entire thread; skip the part about company policy in my last post.

Not asked for BUT ...I agree a bit with Monkey face though...a BIG gift could send an unwelcome and not meant message which you don't want...do you? So just a smaller gift of not as much as dhms 500..... I would say...what about a good box of some of the best chockies...Porchi? Just an idea!

I am planning to get him a balloon and a huge cake and something he can use (??). I’ve been working with him for the past 6 years. He is the Vice President of a huge company in Dubai. Latino. Plays golf and goes to gym all the time. He already got gym bag and golf set. I gave him perfume before but he never used it. I am thinking about kindle ebook, where to buy and how much? Though he already have Ipad, Iphone so maybe he doesn’t need a kindle. Arggh…. Think think think….
