Hey Ladies. My son (age 23) , who has been having some problems with this bones healing etc. underwent some routine blood tests and aside from the low Vitamin D for which he is being treated, it was discovered he has low testosterone levels. We followed up with endocrinologist who ran more tests and found it is a pituitary problem. He was prescribed a testosterone gel Testin. The insurance company said they will not cover it as it is considered fertile therapy drug (I guess) and I do intend to fight this --- but it is Thursday late in the day. On top of it, the cost is over 1,000 Dhs a month to buy it at American Hospital and he was supposed to get a 3 month course and then we would go back to the doctor. . There is apparently a generic brand called Androgel but it is not available at any pharmacy and is supposed to be significantly cheaper (in the event I can't get insurance to pay). I tried Bin Sina who called around for me and tried to find it at other pharmacies.

Just wondering if anyone has bought this here and where and how much. Any thoughts on side effects.

Thanks ladies.

Thank you desertdoc -- I plan to. I will get in touch with him on Saturday or Sunday to discuss it. Very frustrating when all this happens on a Thursday late afternoon. The doctor called me with the results yesterday but did not realise the prescription would be a problem. It just raises so many more questions for the doctor as well. Thanks again.

Ex used to use Androgel and he bought it here...the pharmacy at Spinneys Trade Centre. Insurance did not cover it, as its hormones and the policy excluded hormonal treatment..

Hi Norak. Please ask your son's doctor to write a letter to the insurance company insisting that this is the treatment for his problem and that clearly it's not for fertility problems. Have they seen the blood test results showing the low Testosterone? If all of this is already done, don't give up. You have to be a bit tenacious to win with insurance companies.

Thanks roysie, I googled the same prior and found the same thread. That's what made me ask the question. Just talked to insurance company myseif directly and they said they will not cover it as it is a fertility drug. Very frustrating since the generic form is apparently not available -- but will try LIfe. Thanks.

Just did a quicky google.. someone had asked if you can to bring it into Dubai, then someone had answered that you can buy it here for 270aed, but it does not say where? So at least you know it is possible.... Personally I have always found 'Life' pharmacy good for finding different bits or if not try the lovely lady pharmacist in Jebel Ali by the petrol station near IBN Battuta Mall. Good Luck :)
