I am due in March and am really keen to have a confinement lady this second time around. I have checked with some agencies in Singapore, but they aren't really equipped to supply a confinement nanny/lady outside of Singapore.

And so, I am imploring the power of EW--can you help? :) Do you know of a good one?

It sounds very similar to a maternity nurse, (without the chinese herb aspect and not necessarily over 50). There are lots of UK agencies who provide maternity nurses overseas, you might even find an asian one who could incorporate the chinese practices. best of luck with the new baby.

My Mum teaches so she can only come in school holidays, although - bless her - she did offer to retire and move over here for a couple of months! Dad is meant to be coming as he is retired, but we're not sure if he's well enough at the moment :(. I'm looking at a full-time maid/nanny from an agency but I know it'll cost an arm and a leg and I won't be getting anything like the care you've mentioned below. Business opportunity, anyone?! I'd go for this in seconds if it was available!

Sounds like I want me one of these! :D I know! I have had a few friends that have had them and really raved about the experience! Between the wonderful cooking, help with nighttime feedings, and other issues that may come up (colic, breastfeeding issues, healing, etc), the good ones are worth their weight in gold. Being expats here, it's the closest thing I can get to family-type support...

Sounds like you need your mum to come over to help - can you ask her? I would LOVE for my mom to come--but she is not physically able to make such a long journey and help. It would probably be the case were I would be fretting about my mom and a new baby. So, the confinement nanny is the closet thing I can get to having a mom around. However, I am open to other options! So, if you have a good mama, is she available for a month and likes newborns? :)

What's a confinement lady? Do you mean a Doula? Are you in Dubai or Singapore? I'm in Dubai, but a confinement lady is usually a far east-Asian concept. Here's a good description: a confinement nanny is a pui yuet (literally 'companion for a month' in Cantonese) to help out in the postnatal period. Also known as a confinement nanny, she is usually a woman over 50 years old or older, experienced in caring for the special needs of a new mum and newborn baby according to the traditional confinement practices of the Chinese. She helps the mother and the baby and also cooks a specialized diet (along with traditional Chinese herbs) that helps with recovery and lactation. She can help with breastfeeding and physical and emotional support. It's not really a doula because she lives with you for at least one month and does not really help with the birth. Does this help?
