Has anyone bought a laptop from the US and had it delivered here. Did you pay import duty and if so, how much is it?

Do you think it is safe to order it with shop and ship?

Thanks

I ordered a specialised router and customs fried it with the x-ray machine. DH says that is so unlikely that it's almost certainly just being used as an excuse by whoever really damaged the router by some other means. X-ray machines do not harm consumer electronics. Millions of phones, laptops, cameras, tablets, iPods etc go through X-ray machines at airports every day without incident. All the electronic items in the shops worldwide have been through multiple X-ray machines and scanners etc as well. We've frequently bought electronics through Shop & Ship, never had a problem. Why would we? It's just another shipping service. As has been pointed out, voltage shouldn't be a problem at all for items of consumer electronics, which are generally designed to work globally. The only thing that might be a small issue is if you ship something in from the States and it's got a fixed US-style mains plug that you can't change, but then all you do is use a travel plug adapter with it, or just cut the US plug off and wire on a 3-pin type. The only items that are usually fixed voltage (either 110V or 240V, but not both) are things like hairdryers, curling tongs, kettles, kitchen appliances and so on. edited by Madge_Gustard on 21/06/2014

I use Shop and ship a lot but have never bought any electronics through them. I purchased my laptop from US while visiting my family and it works just fine in Dubai. Cell phones and laptop and desktop are dual voltage . I use desktop/laptop and all cell phones/tablets in my house were purchased from US. The kitchen electronics is another story although I brought my kitchenaid mixer with me and use it daily with the help of a converter. Hope this helps.

Also you might have voltage issues and problems with plugs, any electrical stuff from the US is generally a problem. If you buy from the UK you won't have any problems I dont think. Good point - voltage differences are a pain.

You will pay duty on anything valued over 300$. Difficult with electronics as putting them through scanners etc has the potential to fry any onboard software - had that happen before - I ordered a specialised router and customs fried it with the x-ray machine.
