Hi
We are moving to Dubai in the next couple of months with our 4 children with a view to them starting school in January. We have an 8 year old daughter with on the autistic spectrum. She has aspergers, ADHD & dyslexia. She is currently in a mainstream school here in the UK but does have SENCO support. We would really like to know if anyone knows of the best school in Dubai that would cater for her needs. She is academically behind so we are unsure as to whether we will need to pay for extra SENCO support but if this is the case we are willing to do so. Many thanks in advance

Also I would recommend calling The Brain & Learning 04-4534170. I know that when mu children were doing brain training with them, there was an autistic boy and his mum was very happy with his progress and especially attention. Good luck!

Victory Heights provides excellent learning support and so far do not charge extra for it. It is a very inclusive school. Their fees are reasonable. Kings Al Barsha also provides excellent support for Dyslexia. They do not charge extra but the fees are high. Safa is a very warm and nurturing school but do not give specific learning support. Silicon Oasis do provide learning support but It is not of good quality or specific or consistent.

Hi Jan2014, How did your search for schools go and did you end up moving to Dubai?

Thanks again - the Widad Centre sounds fantastic - i have just googled it & will be contacting them for some more info. I've found the Oasis school website & again that looks great too. I will try & find out a bit more about the internal transfer cut off point as i do think this will help massively in getting the places we want rather than having to take places we don't really want as they are the only ones available. We can be flexible on when we move - my husband has been working in Dubai for a year now but has only just secured a family package so a few more months apart wouldn't be a disaster if it meant getting the places we wanted.

That could be it. I just know that last year when I was applying several schools told me that if I didn't get kids a place for January they would have a much better chance in April as internal transfers weren't allowed then.

I might be wrong but I think it is April not January when only children from outside Dubai are allowed to join schools. I'm pretty sure internal transfers are allowed in January. Not sure if it has changed but internal transfers were only allowed up until the third week of January this year..., I had always thought it to be a January cut off but could be wrong.

Hi I just learned that the Universal Academy of Excellence has been renamed Oasis School. I can't remember where I looked at their web page. I have just googled it and it's not coming up. Just found it. Www.oasisschool.ae

Perhaps you could look at the new Widad Learning Centre in Jumeirah? It only has 100 pupils and caters well for children on the spectrum as well as those that are not. It would be so good for your 8 year old daughter. Your other kids could also go there, but as you said you would prefer them to follow the National Curriculum maybe you could put them at another school located in Umm Suqeim or Jumeirah.

Hi Many thanks for both your helpful comments. They are currently in Years 7, 4, 2 & 1 so i am looking for both primary & secondary places. I'm finding the Year 1 place the most problematic at the moment! Ideally i would like them all at the same school but with such varying needs, i realise this may not be possible but would at least like them all in the same vacinity for logistical reasons. My special needs child is around 20 months behind academically but has only been getting extra help at school since the start of this school year as we only got her formal diagnosis in September. The school she is at in the UK has been pretty poor at providing any support for her so i am set on finding the right school for her in Dubai - i am sure she will then come on leaps & bounds with the right help. I have looked at all the school inspection reports & have made the 'outstanding' schools my focus but most are full & won't even consider allowing us to go on the waiting list! My eldest is very bright so needs an excellent academic school whereas my autistic child needs a more nuturing environment i feel where their focus isn't purely academic. Horizon school is an option but i don't know too much about it. GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis is also available to all 4 of them but it is a bit further out of town than i would like. Repton & Kings are also a possiblilty. JPS sounds fantastic so i will contact them as does the new Academy of Excellence mentioned. If we go on waiting lists, does it mean that in January we would automatically go to the top of the list as overseas applicants? Also if i find spaces for 3 of them to start in January for example, is the other child legally required to attend school or could they stay home until the right place arises? Thanks again for all your help

Hi What year groups are you looking for? The early years are particular hard to find places for at the moment. How far behind academically would your 8 year old be? Are you set on them all going to the same school? There is a new mainstream school (it was previously a school for children with special needs) called the Universal Academy of Excellence. Look at www.theacademy.ae. It may be worth looking at and sounds more inclusive than many schools in the UAE. Sally mainstreaming still has a long way to go here. Having said that, you are in a strong position having 4 children!

Firstly - do all 4 children go to school? Primary/secondary? Getting spots for 4 kids at the same school will be difficult as places at the better schools are hard to come by. You will have the advantage that in January only international movers can take up new spots. As far as schools for a child with aspergers/dyslexia probably the best one is Jumeirah Primary School. JPS would have children with additional needs in nearly every classroom. But....getting a place is very difficult as it has long waiting lists and all parents of special needs children will probably target this school first. Other GEMS schools are usually pretty good for extra assistance as well. I would try GEMS Royal Mirdif and GEMS Wellington Primary School which can be a bit easier to get into. Wellington Primary has smaller classes compared to JPS and Royal Mirdif. There is a new GEMS Wellington Al Khail that would definitely have spaces - but their fees are not small! Safa school may also have places and they are considered a lovely school but not sure of their set up for kids with extra needs. Another school to consider would be the new Victory Heights Primary School but again I don't know their stance on special needs. Some of the most established and most sought after schools do not take special needs children at all. In Dubai - you will essentially be responsible for all the costs associated with support. Most children with additional needs have their own full time aide in the class with them. They may also attend the dyslexia unit (extra fees), OT, PT etc. You will be responsible for every one of these costs. That said - a full time aide would be a lot cheaper than in the UK! so don't panic immediately.
