Hi ladies

We're a one car family (shock horror!) which has always suited us fine. DH uses it daily for work, I jump taxis to and from work as I live close to the office.

Now we have a baby....her car seat is really handy as it fixes into the car via the seat belt, then clips onto the pram when you take her out.

this has meant i can continue to use taxis when DH has the car as i can whizz her in and out in the seat quite easily.

my queston is: when she grows out of this first stage small portable seat - how do i transport her in a car that isn't ours? as the second stage seats (obviously) aren't portable.

funnily enough am not keen on sitting her on my lap like so many here do :)

any gems of wisdom much appreciated....thank you! :)

Hi we didn't have a car in Dubai at all until dd1 was 3.5 and dd2 was 1. Until then, I used the maxi cosi for as long as possible (over 10kgs), followed by the Sit n Stroll and then a booster seat. It really wasn't much of a problem. Oh and I took the metro a lot as it stopped right outside our home :-)

I have been wondering the same thing. I have found some malls have a free luggage storage service. Whether they'll take car seats and how close you can get a car to drop you to them I don't know. I do use Careem and Uber, but I wouldn't be sure what kind of seat I'd get. We booked a Hertz rental car for some friends in Dubai and ordered a seat for a four year old. It was booked months in advance, they sent us a seat for a 0-12 month year old and were unable to change it as were out of stock. Careem may be more reliable. wouldnt you be able to store the car seat behind the information desk, they usually have one somewhere.

I use mostly taxi and drivers and have two children. I kept my kids in the maxi cosi infant seat for as long as possible, when my son finally reached the weight limit (13kg I think?) I bought the lightest carseat I could find. It is the Cosco Highback booster (it has a 5 point harness but can also be used as a booster seat later on) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-High-Back-Booster-Car-Seat-Canteen/16932755 and I bought it from babyshop although I'm not sure if they still stock it. It is really light, less than 5kg I think and really quick to install. It is also airline approved and quite narrow so perfect for use when flying. It is also quite easy to hang over the back of my pram and then I just check it in at the supermarket baggage counter etc if at the mall. Now my daughter (18 months) is in that (she actually still fits in the maxi cosi but she just didn't enjoy it anymore) and my son (nearly 4 year old) uses a trunki-booster pack which is a backpack which folds down into a booster seat. In our car he still has a seat with a 5 point harness which I feel is safer but carrying two big car seats plus dealing with two children was just too much for me so I moved him out of the Cosco when my daughter was big enough for it. one other idea (a bit more faff) is to buy a buggy board for your buggy to help with carrying a heavier stage two seat if you can't find a light one. edited by kiwispiers on 06/05/2014

We always travel with a Sit n Stroll. Unlike previous poster, we found it very easy to use and no problem with regards to comfort.

Can you have your DH use the taxi and use the car when needed? not really, in his line of work he needs to move a lot of stuff around and often travels with a team, so he needs the car. thanks papaye, this is interesting i will investigate the orbit baby (and get my osteo on speed dial if it weights 12kgs!)

Hi I was confronted with the same problem and I found only three options to safely travel in taxis with my baby from 9 months old to 2 years and a half. Google: combi coccoro car seat and stroller, sit and stroll ( I bought it but found it very uncomfortable and difficult to fit so sold it), and orbit baby toddler car seat and stroller. I used on almost daily basis the last one and found it from far the best, until your little one reach two years old, then it becomes a little a bit heavy to move around but manageable.the car seat alone weights around 12kgs so that gives you an idea. Hope that helps.

When we first arrived in Dubai we got around in taxis for the first month until we got cars organised. My daughter was in a stage two seat, with a bit of fiddling about we worked out we could attach her car seat to the back of her buggy, resting on the strut between the back wheels and using a luggage strap. Maybe you could take her buggy when you buy the next car seat and see if you can find one to do the same with? It takes a bit longer getting in and out of cabs but totally manageable.

Yes, don't rely on normal taxis. If you order a family taxi (i.e. driven by ladies) it's supposed to come with a car seat for kids, but I have ordered it three times and so far it's never had a car seat. Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but I think your taxi-hopping days with baby in tow are over..! ooh i never knew that about the family cabs - like you, i've been in hundreds, and never seen a baby seat! really don't want to have to buy a car!! I feel your pain. I have a 20-month old and don't drive. For us the solution has been that my husband drives us everywhere as he is a SAHD. But I know that won't help you. Renting a small car might be the best option...

I would use careem whenever you can. You can order a car with the correct car seat. Its a little bit more expensive than a normal cab but well worth it thanks kitten. i'm a big fan of careem but for short journeys they work out massively cost prohibitive. their minimum fare is 40 AED. ETA and there's the return journey too..... edited by kelly1814 on 06/05/2014
