Been here for a few weeks and just saw a post for shop and ship. Went to the website, but still can't figure how it works. I understand you pay a fee then order from somewhere then it gets sent here, but how does the ordering process work? Is there a specific list of stores and once you go to the store site, is there a shop and ship option? I am a regular amazon.com customer and I have never seen that as an option. I almost ordered something through them a few days ago and the shipping cost was nuts! It was more than what I wanted to purchase! What is the best way to order online and have it shipped here? Is it shop and ship?
Thanks in advance!

Oooh, that's a good question, insomniac. Thanks everyone, for the info. Good to know about the books! I didn't know about anything like that or shipping options. I thought you just had to pay the ridiculous amounts offered by the merchants. Such helpful information. Sigh...there seems to be sooo much to learn, things I didn't think about before and having to figure it out as I need something or need something done. Thank you so much for the responses, I'm very thankful for this site, it has been very helpful as we begin our adventure in this new country! God bless

But what happens if something doesn't fit well? Or it doesn't look the same as in the pictures. Can you send them back again? And I would imagine you have to pay for the return postage etc? I'm sorry, I can't help you there, as I don't usually buy clothing on-line for that very reason. I have no idea what to do.

You would be responsible for return postage and you would have to take into account the time limit on returning items. I have never actually used my Aramex account after setting it up, I tend to buy when I am home, or have visitors bring things out for me which makes it easy if something isn't suitable my visitors can just take the item back again. :)

I've used Shop and Ship too and highly recommend it. However, as stated below, know the costs of what you're buying. Levis jeans are more expensive here, but they're also HEAVY. But I bought 2 swim suits online for something like USD$20 each, and were delivered to my door for about $8 more. Can you buy a decent swim suit that fits in Dubai for 88 AED? If you can, then don't order from the US. I even bought bath robes for my husband and myself. Of course shipping was more on those, but the catalogue price was a steal, and I'd have had to buy from a fancy hotel gift shop to get the same quality. The result was I paid more for the shipping than the robes, but I think I still got them for maybe USD$70 each. I have to admit that I haven't used Amazon UK. I understand they deliver here, so that's a whole different set of comparisons to make. But the "right to your door" convenience is worth a dirham or two in my opinion.

I find Shop & Ship is really useful for online shopping where people won't take a UAE credit card, or will only deliver to the UK or USA. I use it for Amazon a lot, as the free shipping within the UK outweighs (nother pun, sorry) the delivery costs on arrival in UAE. We also use it to buy HP printer cartridges from the UK, as the ones we need for our particular printer scanner are not available at all in the UAE, and for other things like that. Also, for important documents, as it works out a lot cheaper than a courier service like DHL or UPS to get them delivered to the UK address and then shipped here, delivered to my door.

Shop & Ship is part of Aramex. You pay a one-off fee to register, and you are given an account number and a UK and US delivery address (basically a warehouse near Heathrow - I think - and New York). You order online from whichever company, and use the US or UK delivery addresses, with your name and a/c number in the name field). You therefore only pay the in-country delivery costs when you purhcase. BUT you then pay a by-weight delivery fee for delivery to Dubai, so you need to research a bit to make sure it is worthwhile buying online versus buying in Dubai. I've only used S&S a few times. As Some companies deliver direct to Dubai, you need to weigh (sorry for the pun) up the costs involved - again, possibly email them and ask before you order. For example a while ago DDs ordered a load of clothes from Abercrombie&Fitch in the USA, way cheaper than the UK. It worked out cheaper to have them deliver direct than to use S&S service. ETA: I do find their website a bit tricky to work round mind you! I believe quite a few people on EW use it but I've not used it enough yet to say whether it really works costwise as I don't shop online an awful lot, but the above is basically how it works. Hope that helps. edited by october on 08/07/2011
