wonder what will happen here.

American giant bookseller Borders filed for bankruptcy protection today and will close hundreds of stores.
The 40-year-old company, sunk by crushing debt and sluggishness in adapting to a rapidly changing industry, plans to close about 200 of its 642 stores over the next few weeks.
All of them will be superstores, a Borders spokeswoman said.

Unfortunately Diera City Centre, Dubai Mall and all the Spinneys outlets for Magrudys have closed. Rent is very high so yes, that has been a major factor in the decision. Times are not great for any shops these days and Magrudys has been affected too. Think the Mercato Spinney'sone is still open-for now

Must be a worrying time for Border's staff.

Magrudy's also closed at Dubai Mall. Blaming high rents... I'm not convinced that's the reason myself. Books are so expensive here, massive mark-up. And the Magrudy's just closed at Spinney's in the Meadows. What's going on? and Spinneys at Bur Dubai too

But it's just not the same as an actual book! I agree, nothing like feeling, holding a book. hmm, can tell you've been married forever.:\:

The price of international magazines in Dubai is outrageous :\: Get a subscription it’s a lot cheaper.

It's fair to say that Borders though have recently decreased (unbelieveable here really!) their prices and apparently its permanent - not just the discounted books they have at the moment but 90% of the whole range. Got a really good selection of travel books (Lonely Planet) there the other day for 40dhs. Most of the novels (up to date range) were between 30-40dhs. Perhaps that's a sign of the future? They saw the light....or rather than no one was buying ;) edited by Pomegranate on 17/02/2011

Many of the Borders stores in the UK were closed over a year ago..but didn't have any affect on the UAE stores so I agree that they are probably franchises! And when they charge 72dhs for a 3.60 magazine I doubt they'd really be in danger of going bankrupt anytime soon! all the shops here are franchises.

Magrudy's also closed at Dubai Mall. Blaming high rents... I'm not convinced that's the reason myself. Books are so expensive here, massive mark-up. I never buy books here, get them online or when I'm home. so much cheaper. Really-drat-more understandable there given the competition I guess. I don't buy many here but sometimes get desperate for a good read-wonder how long before they all close.....

I imagine that the local Borders are franchises and owned not directly by Borders but by local companies that pay for the rights to use Borders' name and receive Borders' merchandising. But as long as we have Kinokuniya at the Dubai Mall or Magrudy's, I won't be missing Borders. And who knows about your last statement, mmm? ;) But how long will we have Magrudy's-they have already closed at Burjuman and Deira City Centre-who will be next?

I'm a huge fan of bookstores too, but for expats living in the land of extreme mark-ups, e-book are an amazing option. LOVE my kindle. I've just discovered a world of magazines also available in electronic format. Again, SOOOO not the same thing as a paper magazine, but considering the mark-up on magazines here (in my case Qatar, but assuming similar to UAE) I'm loving this option. And on the iPad they are still full color and glossy! http://www.zinio.com/index.jsp I'll save the paper magazines for my flights back from the US.

I read online and have to admit that I am a bookstore junkie and it is not the same. The sensory thrill of seeing all the books lined in cases, the smells, the quirky characters sneaking a read cannot be replaced by a machine. I love it! I do think that Borders in Dubai is overpriced though. Thats true. I prefer magazines in paper format but Ibuy my magazines overseas and not in Dubai as they are overpriced.
