Hi ladies,
I'll be coming to Dubai in few days to live there! Will enter with a resident visa (not visit) and looks like it takes about 2 weeks to get the UAE ID. Only then I can convert my driving license to drive there!

Can I drive during the 2 weeks time while waiting for the ID considering entering with resident visa?
Appreciate your solutions.

Hi, Anybody knows for sure? As of my knowledge, it is not allowed to drive with "foreign" DL a car - except rental cars. BUT I dont know why ... 2 options: 1) T&C of car insurance - in this case, the police wont bother, but the insurance cover may be lost 2) Legally stipulated ... then the police could fine you However, friends of mine did drive with Western DL private cars and at least 2 hit a traffic control - and passed. Could be both, good will of police officers or the hint, that its just an insurance thing....

I don't mean to hijack your post but I'm curious about something now... My husband has his visa residency but waiting on something else before the kids and I can go get our resident visas...with that being said - I think I'm okay to drive but it's a vehicle given to us by my husbands employer. If I get pulled over with no local license will I get into trouble?

Hi, With home DL drive only RENTAL CAR ! If rental comp accepts your papers, it shall be fine. Just provide them the docs and let them decide to give you a car - and you are insured. And as long as your visa is not stamped, also the police doesnt know it. For them you are visitor. Just be careful, that you dont drive a private car! Thats a bad idea with foreign DL.

They now need to scan your emirates id, they have a little card scanner, so the paper work/application won't work.

I have a UK license and was allowed to exchange for a UAE one as soon as I had my visa. I took my paperwork to show I was waiting for my EID, but they didn't even ask for it.

To drive on your current licence you would need a visit which you won't have, you can't drive until you have a UAE licence once you have a residents visa. Just been through this with new staff member and his wife. Not happy campers!

I believe you may be able to rent a car while you wait....depending on where your current drivers license is from. But you can't register and drive your own car without the UAE license & UAE ID.

Yes unfortunately, once you have your residents visa you need the UAE license! Gives you time to shop around for a car

No, once you have a residents visa you need a UAE driving licence unfortunately. Hopefully you aren't waiting too long. Best of luck with the move!
