A long time ago (at least 7-8 years ago) even a tourist could go and get a 1 year UAE temporary driver's from the RTA. My German DH did it when he forgot his international driver's license and wanted to hire a car in Dubai. The rental car company just took him off to the RTA and got him a UAE license valid for a year, and everything was fine. You can't do that anymore, but maybe that was what tigerente was talking about.

Wish I'd known this in February when I cheerfully handed over my car keys to a guest saying..."don't worry, it's the car that's insured, not the driver"! it is the car that is insured, but only if they have a valid uae driving licence not as a tourist

We were advised by the RTA and AXA that a direct family member is covered providing they have a driving licence from a country that does not make you sit a test here. Mother, Father, Son, Daughter Temp licences were fazed out a while back i know they have said that but unless you have it in writing i wouldnt trust them. it doesnt say anything in their terms and conditions. We did as it was for my heavily pregnant friend whose Father had to drive her to hospital when she went into labor. well in an emergency then perhaps but i still wouldnt chance it, if you were stopped and could only produce foreign licence you will get into trouble

Yes - I thought this had always been the case. We have never allowed our visitors to drive our car for this reason. i dont think visitors would want to venture out onto the roads here.... Fair comment! Although we have had enquiries about this from people before they arrive, then they take one look at the roads and decide that Dubai Taxi will meet their needs perfectly! yep unless you are an advanced driver, you soon learn. my mum has been coming to visit me twice a year for last 15 years, and each time she comments about the driving and always says that she would never drive here, and she learnt to drive in london.

I was always under the impression and even my insurance broker had given me the same information last February. A non-resident, driving a car from a resident here in Dubai needs to have the international driving license converted here at the RTA to a temporary driving license. I have been today at the RTA and they told me that’s not possible anymore and non-residents are only allowed to drive rent a cars. They informed even if the insurance would cover the non-resident driver and in case of an accident the car would be insured however the driver would be jailed as he would not have a license recognized in the UAE. Is this really true? TIA yes thats true, in the past you could just get an international licence but they got away with that maybe more than a year ago, maybe 2. as a tourist (visit visa) you can only use your foreign licence and rent a car, you cannot drive a private car, you can only do that once you have a UAE visa and transfer it to a UAE driving licence. i wouldnt want to drive someones car if not insured (which it wouldnt be) in this place. Today just driving the school run a stupid old western expat with stupid gloves on nearly ran me off the road...... but thats what its like sometimes.

Same here. Non-residents can only drive hire cars, not that of a resident. Even if the insurance company tells you it's ok, don't believe them, because it's not.
