I have a credit card from HSBC here in Dubai. Last year when I was on holiday in UK I noticed that more and more shops are using chip n pin credit cards and on several occasions they had to retrieve their old fashioned swipe machine from under the counter to take my payment! Well a year on and I'm going back to UK again next week and am worried that my UAE c card will be totally defunct.
Anyone been to UK recently and been able to use their cc without problems?

Its worth remembering UAE credit cards don’t have payment protection, if you lose your card and someone uses it, you foot the bill. Hmmmm....

It's touch and go using HSBC CC from the UAE in the UK, many supermarkets just will not accept them as they have no way but pin and chip.

I never use my Dubai cards back in the UK, I just make sure I transfer plenty of cash before I leave. Also Ive found recently our cards here have been stopped for no reason, so frustrating.

Really seems to depend where you are. I lost my UK AMEX card just before I went back to the UK last time, and hence they gave me a temporary replacement without a chip and pin. I used it everywhere I went (around London, Bicester and Hampshire) and noone had a problem with me signing instead.

If there's no chip technology embedded in the card, then the Chip'n'Pin reader can't ask for it. ;) Although retailers do have the right to refuse to accept card payment if it's not a C&P card. Not many do, but lcfcfem has the example of Sports Direct, and there's at least one UK car rental company that states in its website T&Cs that payment has to be made via a C&P card.

In the UK at the moment using my non chipped card all over the place, just have to explain sometimes that it needs to be swiped. Have been asked for ID once and UAE driving licence is sufficient.

I always tell the cashier before hand that it is not chip and pin and normally do not have a problem. However, at Easter, I did have Sports Direct state that they could not take my card at all as it was their policy that NO chip and pin NO card allowed, and as I did not have cash, I could not purchase my goods. Now I always make sure I have enough cash for the 'just in case' scenario.

It has chip n pin technology for debit cards - i rarely have to sign, it's mostly PIN number...

I had a similar issue in Australia earlier this year -- it's all chip'n'pin there as well -- but even most of their modern C&P machines had an option/button that could be chosen so a signature could be given rather than the PIN. Failing that, some other shops I used just waited after all the info [bar the PIN'> was keyed in and eventually [well after about 10-20 seconds'> out spat a docket for a signature. I just explained that I didn't have a chip in my CC and it was dealt with; UAE isn't the only country in the world without the C&P technology. :)
