We are cat lovers and had a beautiful Persian cat in Australia. We decided not to get a pet in Dubai because of travel etc. However our children are desperate for another cat (missing home and their friends) and we are now considering it....is there anything I need to look out for when looking for a kitten? Hi JMP, Not sure if you've already got yourself a kitten/Cat... but incase you haven't, there's an adorable little kitty at Al Safa Vets who is really sweet. He's not a persian but he's gorgeous and so friendly... he's looking for a home, if you really want a persian there's also a really gorgeous black persian cat who is looking for a home at Al Safa. I would love to take them home myself but I'm currently tube feeding one cat every 2 hours, searching for my lost kitty and have just taken in a 17 year old cat who now calls my place home...

Great advice...I've now been in touch with Feline Friends and we have done a complete turnaround thanks to your input and we'd like to look into fostering. Our children are 12,14 & 18 so will be able to cope with the responsibility and the have a new focus....Thanks so much to everyone. Great news JMP I did exactly what you are doing(had 9 cats back home so couldn't take on any more..) I can honestly say it was one of the most rewarding experiences my DH and I ever had. I still keep contact with the "New Parents" LOL Eva B. Please don't let the fact that you can't choose put you off. Talk to FF Foster co ordinator and explain your situation and they will match you up as best they can. I always felt that the right cat was "sent" to me at the right time. If I look back I have never chosen an animal, they have always chosen us in one way or another,.....and have never been dissappointed with the outcome. All the best in persuading DH ;)

Yay...good decision all round JMP! Every cat you help is getting a much needed second chance and your kids will (continue to :) ) learn valuable lessons in giving and the value of every life. Have fun with the little fur balls that will call your house home for a while. :D

I love the idea of fostering. I am considering getting a Persian cat. I had cats before and once a Persian but that has been so long. The thought of the relocation cost does scare me a bit. As well as my husband never had cats, so it would take some getting used to for him. Shame you can't choose your cat at Feline Friends. Does anybody know of a fostering program where I could choose? So my husband will see how lovely they are and we can adopt it after all :).

If you would like to adopt after all - or anybody else for that matter - I have 2 adorable kittens I am fostering that are looking for a home. Why don't you try fostering for Feline Friends. That way you don't have the travel problems when you eventually move back to Aus, but your children have all the benefits of looking after cats/kittens here. You'll have to be prepared for the fact you're only looking after them until they find a new permanent home, however there will ALWAYS be more for you to look after! www.felinefriendsdubai.com will give you a bit more info.

If you do get a kitty, please take Nomad's advice and start saving now for relocation costs. Another poster's husband is telling her kitties will have to be euthanized because it's "too expensive" to relocate them to Oz (Moron IMHO - I know who I'd be going to Oz with and they wouldn't have 2 legs and an a -hole). Hmm. Oops!

Just to add to the good info you have already got here. I have re locted cats and dogs all over the planet and find the best way to take care of the costs when the time came for "the trip" was to save a bit in a seperate bank account every month. It was my instead of hairdo fund ......LOL Honestly though you are on the right track as far as helping the children settle. It was always the consistancy of having our animals with us that helped both our boys settle into their new countries. Not sure what Mellie 78 was getting at re cat hair as OP had mentioned that she had a Persian in Aus so would know all about grooming and cat hair.I never had a cat hair problem just put a throw cover over the moggies favorite sleeping area. The ladies who have posted are really experienced and can walk you through the process. All the best finding your new kitty.:)

Two major things you need to consider are is they cat going to be kept as a house cat or are you going to let it roam and where will you locate the litter tray? I am a Feline Friends fosterer and always have a house full of kittens looking for homes ... 6 at the moment! Agree Assisi... But said friend has worked closely with FF as a volunteer(sp). This particular cat came to her at almost midnight after all other leads had been exhausted. As an animal lover she felt she had no choice but to let it into her home. And she has no regrets but as i said already has a flat full of cats so needs to find good homes.

If you do want a forever cat then my friend took in a beautiful (pregnant!) tabby as a last minute necessity.... It went on to have 5 gorgeous kittens. 3 tabbies, 2 all white! 8 weeks old and adorable. And mummy cat is such a lovely tabby. Good natured and we think only about a year old. She was found in a building having been abandoned by her owners... All litter trained. And as my friend already had 3 cats...All ready to find a forever home. x

How old are your children? If they are really little, you may find it a whole lot easier if you take on an adult cat...even a young adult. There are always lots of cats looking for homes and many of them come from family homes so they are used to children. I'll echo kelly too and suggest that you call the various relocation companies for a rough estimate on moving the cat with you back to Aus or wherever you may end up. Last time I looked for quotes it was about AED12K to get a cat to Aus if you pay someone to do all of the paperwork and vet stuff, plus min AUD1200 (up to AUD7200) for quarantine in Aus. Good luck finding the right kitten or cat for you. edited by Green-ish on 23/08/2011

Try to adopt one from say Feline Friends (or similar organizations) or a vet office - so you can be sure it doesn't have ringworm or any of the yucky eye problems so prelevant amongst cats here.

be prepared for the high cost of shipping it to the next place that you live, or to take it back home...that seems to be a major issue for pet owners here.
