I reckon the best advice I've ever read here was to insist on seeing a cooker with the oven at full heat before buying! The number of houses I went to where LOTS of heat was escaping out the oven door (while closed, lol) was amazing. They seem to have really crappy seals. Friends even spent a small mortgage on a Smeg and the door seals were so bad they couldn't bake in it. Our cooker also had a great gas cooktop, but the leaky door seal made the oven pretty useless. (It came from the Seimens factory but was an unbranded poor cousin.) Absolutely try before you buy! Thanks Green-sih - that's really good advice, wouldn't have considered that at all. Do they do that though in the shops???

Even more confused now after reading these... I am looking to replace our old second-hand gas cooker with an electric oven & gas hobs one. I have no idea which brand might be best - I am looking for an oven that doesn't burn my cakes from the bottom & leaves the top uncooked and has knobs that indicate the actual temperature as opposed to having me guess how far to turn it to achieve a certain temperature... and self-cleaning - that sounds awfully nice - is that recommendable? Ant more opinions...oh and also - shouldn't be too expensive...mmmm

My only advice is DO NOT buy a Siemens - honestly if it is even offered to you for free don't take it. We have a Siemens (well, it's the LL's) it's gas hob and oven and it's seriously great. I have a Siemens back home and I love it! Every time I have to use my hated Fisher&Paykel here, I want to cry. You can't even begin to compare the two cookers. The Siemens is very easy to use and can be controlled in every way for consistent results. With the Fisher&Paykel it is a hit and miss. I still have to bake anything successful in it and doing dishes in the oven is rarely successful. I want my Siemens back! :(

For me BOSCH is good. I dont like Siemens (gas); the oven is not good for baking.

Had a new Siemens all in one electric for 18months and loved it. When we moved, I replaced the horrible LL's hob and oven with a Siemens gas hob and electric oven. So far so good. I wonder why someposters are saying Siemens are bad.We always buy our appliances big and small from Jacky's. Service and after sales are good. edited by fjcruiser on 16/09/2011

You could be the first and only person to ever say that a siemens is great. Seriously, there is almost enough siemen haters to form our own forum... edited by Stardust on 15/09/2011 lol. When we moved a month ago, the LL offered to leave the cooker. DH agreed. When I came to choose paint for the villa the following day, I noticed it was a Siemens and promptly told DH we wouldn't be using it. We have a 10 year old tiny Indesit cooker from DH's bachelor days, works like a dream though, so never replaced it. Anyway. DH won the battle even after Reading some comments on here and 2 months down the line, I love it. But I won't tell him that. And the old Indesit is still in the garage just incase this is simply the honeymoon period and I later realize the Siemens is a heap of sh...! But so far, it cooks and bakes like a dream, touch wood! I can't bake cakes in mine, DH LOVES cakes so we are busy upgrading to a SMEG - LOL :)
