Hi! Its a good idea your friend to consult a lawyer here and in Holland. She should however think very well what will be the benefits of a divorce here if none of them are local. Dubai does not have in most cases law agreements with the European countries. Even if a divorce outcome here would be of a great interest to her it might not be recognized in Holland, i.e. the decisions of Dubai courts might not be recognized by the Dutch court, thererore he will not be bind to paying the support a court here might decide.
thanks everyone, have passed on the info...think the trouble here is it is very different to elsewhere, and so to have a lawyer that fully understands how things work in the UAE, with regard to packages and visas, is what she was looking for...maybe one of these links will provide that, thanks again...
well knowing the Dutch system, she can always contact an Emirati/Arab lawyer who will back up the laws of the country to her advantage at the Dutch court..Her best option is to contact the Dutch Embassy here..they might be able to direct her to the right place/lawyer..
also, getting a copy of his job contract will solve the issue of the housing, but let her make sure from the Dutch embassy whether she needs to notarize the contract or not..also, where is the husband from? that might also make a huge difference..

Cannot she get a copy of her husband's contract? yeah I agree met muurtje. A Dutch lawyer specialized in international divorces is her best option! good luck to your friend.

After a quick google search; divorce abroad I found this website. It gives good info and also mentions a lawyer. Hth.
What about contacting a divorce lawyer in the Netherlands? There will be lawyers there who specialize in international divorce. Is her (ex) husband also from the Netherlands? I would try to contact a big law firm in one of the larger cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Den Haag.
I hope that the outcome of the divorce will be as favorable for your friend as possible.
hi all, well my friend has tried the suggestions below, but there don't seem to be any divorce lawyers...does anyone have any other recommendations? her big issue is that the husband's work pays for the villa directly, and so this won't be factored in to any package calculations...she is really concerned that she can't find anyone who understands how things work here, and that it will work against her in the final settlement...
Belinda, do you by any chance know who your friend used...?
thanks again!
Tell her to have a look at a mediator. A friend of mine, here and Dutch ,just went through the same. They had a mediator in Holland and they took the whole housing, scholing ect in to the divorce settlement.
You can also ask on the Nederlandse vereniging website for a lawyer, or the Facebook page of them.

MrsMozz, sorry to hear about your friend. Must be really hard to go through divorce, esp. when you're in a foreign country without family around. At least she's got a good friend in you :)
There's an organisation in Dubai, called Nederlanders in Nood ('Dutch in Distress'). Maybe she can call them...in their advert it says they offer help in legal, financial and medical matters, and also assist with family- and personal matters. They have a 24-hrs help line:
050 458 2332
Maybe they can offer advice on what to do.

hi, does anyone know of a good Dutch divorce lawyer...? a friend of mine here is going through divorce, but it will go through the Dutch courts...the divorce is looking like it could get messy and she wants someone who understands about life here (ie will be able to take into account that in addition to salary, hubbie's housing allowance is paid, school fees, flights etc)...any recommendations at all would be fantastic, many thanks...
