Free time? I get up usually around 5 or 6 and nurse my 3 month old twins (which takes longer than you might think). Then I drop my son (6) off at school in the morning. I come back and play with my daughter (nearly 2) for an hour or so. Feed my twins again. Feed my daughter. Then, I put my daughter down for a nap and usually go to the grocery store or shopping for whatever things we need or, if I'm lucky, spend time with the twins. When my daughter wakes up, we have about 30 minutes usually before we need to go pick up my son. So we play. And then, we pick up my son and take him to an activity, or sometimes he has a playdate. Then I feed the twins, make dinner and get everyone bathed and in jammies and off to bed. Then, I hop on EW and see who has started a fight :)

I have 2 nannies & 1 house maid - all live in. I have 2 maids room so 1 has a room all to herself & i have bunk beds in the other room. Good Lord how many children do you have? I have 3 kids. I dont work but I do spend most of day being taxi driver to the kids. School runs & after school activities, playdates etc. I can't do it all myself so I have the extra nannies to help therefore all my kids get to do what they want. Plus it is affordable here so why not? Just a question, not a judgement, but do you ever wonder if your kids are going to turn out obnoxious expat spoilt brats? How do you counter act that happening? LOL@JJ perhaps she lets her kids do their own laces and pick up their things to make sure. Or, maybe she is preparing them for a future where they will always expect and have maids. SQ - No I'mnot preparing them for a future where they will alway expect & have maids. And infact my oldest does pick up his own things. He tidy's his own room ALWAYS, eats at the dinner table & tidy's his plate away after. What's wrong with that???Nothing wrong with it. I wish mine would.

So how do you spend your days? Not judging but would like to know. My mom took us to the local pool 2x a week, played cards/bridge once a week - in the summer, we went to the beach 2 or 3x per week in winter, my dad (and sometimes my mom if my dad wasn't giving her a break) took us fishing, swimming, skating, tobogganing or just for a Sunday drive or a walk in the woods. BTW my dad travelled at least a week out of every month - again, not judging, but what do you do with your free time?

I do agree it is affordable here - I must mention it to my mother with 3 children over the age of 4 then had twins. She however did have a lady who came on Monday mornings who not only cleaned but baked (great cookies) and polished the floors (floor waxer) washed windows, etc. etc. all in 4 - 6 hrs per week. I'm not saying don't take advantage of the opportunities of living here while they last - but please don't try to make out like it's too much hard work for anyone who doesn't have the option to take care of. (especially the "live a miserable life" comment). It is what it is. Of course, we were almost literally thrown outside to play if it wasn't a blizzard or a thunderstorm in order to keep the house clean LOL edited by marycatherine on 22/01/2011 Your mom is not me. I'm not saying everyone would be miserable, but I would be.

My oldest (he's 6) is very well disciplined with impeccable manners. Not saying that because I'm his mum but because I have been told by his techers & other parents when he goes to his friends house's. As for him being spoilt for his recent birthday party he asked for his guests not bring him a present but to donate money to a charity he had chosen. How many 6 yr olds do you know that would do that? DH is very strict with the kids & when he's travelling for work I continue with it. Although my youngest (he's 20mths) could be a little spoilt as he does get away with alot more but he is also disciplined by me if need be.

SQ, a butler used to be head of the domestic staff, so not so much of the menial tasks. oh ok, so that would be the 'top' maid then? Oh do you have a *bottom maid* SQ? well the bottom maid in the kitchen preparing sandwiches for school tomorrow........then she has to clean the chucks out.......then serve 10 starving men at 11.30pm ......no time for her bottom today...

I do not have any full time maid but i frequently wonder when i see families with maids in shopping malls, restaurants, airports, etc that it is at least as difficult with them as without them... so i am of the opinion that whoever goes to the path of hiring multiple ones must really need them otherwise not worth it...

I was wondering if there was still a place for butlers in the modern world. I'm fairly sure the queen has one, but who would feel the need otherwise? SQ, a butler used to be head of the domestic staff, so not so much of the menial tasks. A good reference would be "Remains of the Day", film or the book.

and what does a butler do, that a maid does not? Just curious. Oh dear SQ you don't know? A butler is far higher in status than a maid. hmmm but who cares about status? as long as someone else does all the work, who cares....I mean, really? yeah who in their right mind would want to be a butler when you could be cinderella and eventually get to the ball in your own right.

A bit off topic, but does anyone have, or know of anyone who has a butler? Once you have more than one domestic, you may as well go for a full set! ROFL!!!!

Why does everyone have to be so judgemental ? It's no-one else's business how you choose to spend your money.
