I agree with nutty.. Do NOT put anything in your LO's ears. I too was a hosite for 10 years and have probably seen it all and heard the poor kiddies screaming because of their ear pain. A drink on take off and landing and something like Karvol on a tissue and inhaled can keep things clear and make things a little more comfortable. Good luck and safe travels!!

You can buy things called EarPlanes in Boots. I travelled out on Friday with a cold and clear ears but on landing was in agony, my ears blocked and they still are even now. I travelled back yesterday and bought some EarPlanes which helped but I am still a bit blocked but at least I didn't get the pain. Having been through this there is no way I would want to travel with a child without using something like this. They are plugs but there is a little valve inside which helps adjust the pressure, still a bit painful and not comfortable to wear. A child may want to pull them out. I don't recommend travelling but I doubt you have a choice. Good luck!

Oh and ask to sit forward of the wings, not any difference in cabin pressure just less vibration on already sore ears.

Worst thing you can do is block an ear already blocked! Hostie for 12 and had the unfortunate experience of earblockage pain. Anything to clear the eustatian tubes (nasal spray otravin, medication) Can also buy inhalants that you disolve in hot water and inhale. Seen various acts of stupidity though, cotton in ears, cup over ears etc. Give child decongestant, a drink on take off and landing or something to chew but do not block their ears!

Can't help you with your question but I don't think its recommended to fly with a cold, let alone a 'really really bad' one.......I've heard it can cause a burst eardrum and loads of discomfort.....may have to rethink your travel plans? thats maybe not that easy.... perhaps go to the chemists and see what medicine you can take with you to help those ears just in case you need it as travelling when u are blocked up isnt fun at all.
