You will be fine! However, I will admit that traveling with my little one still freaks me out a bit although we have done three trans-atlantic journeys before she was 1 year old (the first being at 8 weeks!). The most helpful tips I have found: 1). I pack everything in a backpack/rucksack (the camping kind--a big one, but not huge)--this keeps my hands free as I don't have a trolley to pull. Plus, they have loads of pockets that make organizing easy (diapers/nappies and wipes in one, bottles in the other, food in another, passports in the secret compartment). This way I don't have to tear through the whole bag looking for a container of milk. (I don't bother with a diaper bag) 2). I take my Ergo baby carrier with me--my DD has loved this thing from birth. I put her into and walk the aisles if I need to, or I can let her sleep on me if need be and not worry about dropping her. 3). Bottle or binky/dummy on take off and landing (really helps their ears). 4). I always take a soft fuzzy hat that snaps on (the planes can be freezing and I worry about ear aches). 5). I never pack a lot of toys, maybe one or two--i found she never really played with them and was more fascinated by the most mundane things: an empty water bottle, a motion sickness bag, my iphone, the seat belt buckle... Hope this helps. You will be great, though! Good luck edited by coconnell on 23/08/2011

I have been travelling with my boys from the time they were three months old. It definitely helps to feed the baby during take off and landing just to prevent any earache. And also make sure to ask for bassinet (bulk head seat) as others have mentioned as it helps to have hands free for parts if not most of the flight. Good luck!

Hi Muu, I have three children under the age of 5 with the youngest just 9 months old. I have flown alone with all my children as babies but i was really dreading my latest 7 hour flight as it was my first time flying alone with all three. I couldn't book a night flight as i couldn't risk my 3 and5 year old being asleep on landing. I needed them to walk through the airport. I booked a bulk head/bassinet seat but as my baby was too big to use the bassinet i took advantage of the extra floor space by putting a blanket on the floor for my baby to play on. My baby is crawling which has to be the worst time to travel on an airoplane and with two other children to look after i almost cancelled my holiday but in the end it wasn't half as bad as i expected and definately worth the effort. Just be prepared with plenty of food, toys, diapers etc and you will be fine! Good luck!

Hi Muu, I work as crew so ill give you a couple of pointers. Most importantly, if bubba starts crying don't worry about noise etc. I know how other paxs can be but there is no use you getting stressed out, your baby is just that. a baby. Lots of babies don't like being on a lap for takeoff and landing but i think the best things are having something to keep them entertained like a teddy or a rattle. Or even better feed them on takeoff as its good for the ears. Also don't be scared to ask the crew for help whether if you need to go to the toilet and need someone to hold the baby or if you need milk heating up etc. Try and also get a bassinet seat which is great for night flights. Most of the crew love babies because they never demand 6 beers at a time! Also on a night flight go to the airport in a all in one or pjs so as soon as seatbelt signs are off you can get them off to sleep. You will be fine. I think you will find your baby should sleep most of the time, I rarely find a baby awake during the night especially on a night flight. Just relax and you will be fine and remember the crew are there to help! I hope you get nice crew! Im guessing your flying Emirates or maybe BA?

I flew from dubai to UK last month with my 4 month old and about to return (now she is 5 months). Everybody told me not to worry, take a night flight and she would sleep.... they were right, slept most of the way. The only thing i would say is be prepared to take your LO out the buggy and fold it up through every security check - highly annoying and fiddly when you have a baby, handluggage and baby milk/liquids to show. The other thing id tell you not to worry about is milk (if you are feeding him/her yourself this wont apply obviously) i took the powder and cartons of ready made formula and ellas kitchen sachets no problem at all.
