Morning ladies,

I am returning back to the UK in a few months and need to find the cheapest possible way to take my furry friend with me. I have flown him back to the UK before and did the paperwork myself but i'm sure the bill still racked up to about 10k aed. (he is quite a chunky lad... 30kg or so) He has only ever flown with BA.

I remember a vet friend telling me that she flew her labs back with KLM and it saved her a lot. She had two if i remember rightly. I'm sure she said that she took them as excess baggage, obviously not in the cabin but thats how they priced it. Does anybody know about this?

I'm on a major budget but rehoming him is not an option. His flight is more important than mine... ;-)

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks all :)

smartie1, please note that the kennels are made to the dogs dimensions and not the their weight. Thy have to be able to stand up properly with clearance of the ears, there has been be a certain excess in length from the nose and tail and they have to be able to turn around. The DEFRA website is really useful for getting it right with regards to sky kennels.

No, the UAE requires all animals arrive as cargo and not as checked baggage.

I checked the KLM website and it says that dogs cannot go as checked baggage to the UK (amongst other countries) - they have to fly as Cargo. KLM also specify hard plastic kennels and not the wooden ones. If anyone has any advice regarding the cheapes way to transport 2 dogs (20kg without kennel) to the UK - please post on here. Thanks

The cheapest way to fly them is to check them onto the same flight as yourself, they are considered as checked luggage.

I would also be interested to know about the best/cheapest airline for the UK as will be flying 2 dogs in September. Also if anyone can recommend a cheap place to get the crates made for dogs around 20kg. Jane30 - not sure if you have this already but the Rabies blood test is about 900aed! Mine are due to have it in a couple of weeks hence why they cant fly until Spetember. Emirates have an information leaflet that you can download from their website about transporting pets - just search for it on their website as it may be useful for you.
