Just today got blood test results for my 6 year old about the foods he has an intolerance to. Wasn't expecting all of this.
The elevated ones are Wheat Bran, Gliadin, eggs, all milk, peanut, oat, peach, soy. :-(

So, my question to you is which are the best grocery stores to shop for those with specialty diets? Organic Cafe, I'm sure. Any others? Can't imagine there are any regular grocery stores that have well labels sections for "nut free", "gluten free", etc.,.

In addition , what gluten free flour do you find is best for baking?

I'm really "green" in this area... :-(

Thanks!!!

Removing foods containing preservatives, additives and food dye from one's diet, definitely helps too. which is why it always strikes me as odd that those with allergies and intolerances use over processed alternatives. I think you will find most dont.

sorry nicky, didnt realise there was a question here, The celiac test is a simple blood test looking for antibodies to gluten. (Thats the first step) Assuming you are all sorted now with Dr Klein Nicky and have had the right tests? More about the lab side of things RE Celiac tests here: http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/celiac-disease/tab/test

Can I ask what the celiac test actually is? I've done food intollerance just waiting for the results, since then have met dr Michael Klein that you mentioned purple, what a great man, can't believe I've let my stomach problems go on for so long before finding him! Does anyone recommend any of the on line shops for breads and pasta? Thanks

And by the way, what is "Alga espaguette "?? That's one of the things that popped up as elevated. However, when I try to search for it on the Internet, it isn't clear what it is linked to, except for seafood of some sort. ??

Thanks so much to you all! We are waiting on the Celiacs test- results should be in next few days for that. I have an appt. with a Dietician to go over results, on Thursday. I am now also considering having a test, myself. While I've always been relatively thin, my belly is always bloated. :-/ I'm a carb-eater. So easy to grab on the go! And I love cereal! Celiac is genetic so if your sons results are positive, all first degree relatives should be tested. No need for the intolerance test, just do the Celiac test. Do NOT cut gluten before the test, I can not stress this enough, even a week on a gluten free diet can make the test give a false negative. Good luck :)

Places like Geant sell egg replacer and rice milk as well as gluten free pasta etc. Purple your link talks about getting a false negative for gluten intolerance but do you know if it's possible to get a false positive? my link talks about a false negative for Celiac, but as mentioned, you can not diagnose gluten intolerance without ruling out Celiac. With over 95% of Celiacs being undiagnosed, many of those undiagnosed are ones with a wrong diagnosis (IBS, intolerance, stress tummy, etc etc). The food intolerance tests will show different results depending on a whole range of factors. A gastro will diagnose gluten intolerance by [i'>ruling out Celiac[/i'>, response to diet and other factors (I am not a dr so will not go in to all the details). If you are an adult then I highly recommend Dr Rolef or Dr Klein with Healthbay polyclinic, both are very knowledgeable when it comes to gluten issues. edit to add, as a general rule, anything to do with wheat / gluten and dairy should be done using the specific tests for those foods as they are the most accurate. edited by Purple on 19/03/2013 Thats correct. My test showed I have Gliadin intolerence which was wrong. I have problems with certain grains (some which have gluten). It is really best to go speak to a professional about your test results. They will explain each and every item in detail and tell you what to stay away from (you would be amazed to know how much food we eat have ingredients you would never think they have...)

It is advisable to NOT cut gluten from the diet until Celiac disease has been ruled out, looks like this test was not done...? http://www.glutenfreeuae.com/diagnosis.html I am not sure which dr you saw but can highly recommend you see Dr Loubser and ask his opinion before taking further steps. I will leave out how I feel about intolerance testing. But there is a test for dairy also, where the test checks ONLY for dairy, not a whole heap of things. Good luck.

If you havent already seen someone to discuss the test results, I would very highly recommend you pay a visit to Dr. Heather at the welcare clinic in Dubai Mall. She is excellent and will give you a really detailed explanation on what your next steps are. I also did this test and she advised I cut the foods out for 3 months and slowly reintroduce them back into my diet then watch for reactions (if any). So it became a temporary issue rather than a permanent one. Maybe the same is happening with your child.

Have a look at www.glutenfreeuae.com for receipes, information, etc. They've also got a facebook page with loads of people will be able to help you out. www.facebook.com/glutenfree.uae Also check out the gluten free supermarket which delivers all over UAE and has some wonderful gluten free and other products. They also have some breads which are gluten free and dairy free and egg free - not sure about soy. But they include a list of all ingredients for each product, so it's easy to browse. www.glutenfree-supermarket.ae Most Spinneys and some Lulu hypermarkets these days have some gluten free breads, pasta, cereals, bars, etc... of course you'll need to start reading up all the ingredients to make sure they don't contain the other foods your child is intolerant to. Good luck.
