Hi, we've recently moved here to Dubai, & are in the situation where we will probably be homeschooling our kids (dd 10,ds 9 & ds 6), at least until September (then to be revised). We need to meet up with other hs families & also find some tutors too.

I had a look at some previous posts & found that there are some ex teachers out there who tutor now. One post was by "notmyrealname" who said she was a tutor who was setting up a business to connect parents with teachers/tutors.

Any chance of some advice from members who have experience in this area? I'd be really grateful for any help in this area please.
Thanks

Hi ozfamily, I would like to know where your location is? I know a tutor in Jumeira 2 though. If you are there nearby, I could help you out.

You can try Mackenzie Ross Learning Solutions. 2 of my friends now use them and they're very satisfied. HTH edited by Mollydxb on 25/06/2013

Hi - I am looking for a tutor to assist my daughter (Year 1) over the summer with basic reading, writing and maths. I work full time so she is often too tired to concentrate by the time I arrive home. If anyone is around over the summer who provides this service please post back. Thank you

Hi lidkekiwi It's been awhile since I checked back into this post. Yes I am still looking for a tutor, ive narrowed it down to needing a maths tutor at this stage. Primarily for my daughter aged 10. She has GAD (general anxiety disorder) & finds Maths very difficult to concentrate on. We live in Jumeirah Islands, are you any where near us? Thanks Jo Hi, my daughter has Just been diagnosed with GAD and it would be interesting to talk to you, I don't know anybody else with it.

There are children who have homeschooled for years and successfully entered UAE schools, both with and without a transfer certificate. A woman recently outlined step by step the process she went through for getting her homeschooled child into a school here in dubai.

There is definitely a time limit for being outside the regular school system if you are looking at getting your children into school here next year. This is something you should seek clarification on.

Honestly, I am not sure you really need a tutor right now, even to make sure your children are at the standard you expect. That will be more organization (headache ?) for you to supervise and monitor the tutor than directly your children. As far as I know, only K12 curriculum is recognized here as a school, therefore, making you able to have your children reintegrate a regular school in Dubai later. Maybe it has changed, as I checked 1 or 2 years ago, and the laws change quite often. I would advice you to double check that with DUNEHA. If you take K12 curriculum the children are followed by teachers/tutors online, and have also the possibility to meet tutors in their premises in Knowledge Village. As far as I know, they offer a very good support, so there are already enough tutoring for a child here. Maybe start like this, so your children stay in the rythm, and if there have difficulties, then you will have a better view on what kind of help you need.

Duneha has some co-op type classes going on right now with a tutor. I think they are not the basics of math/reading but more extra classes like robotics. What programs are you thinking of using or do you create your own? If you end up going with a complete classical curriculum like k12 or calvert, your 10 and 9 year old should be able to do most of the work independently and might not even require a tutor. My DD is nearly 10 and does the majority of her work without my assistance. I usually do science experiments and some history with her. Math, literature, grammar, spelling, composition, and french are done alone and I just check her work, give her feed back and administer tests.

Thanks Tiki, I guess my need right now is not specific enough to have a tutor for a specific subject. I want to make sure my kids education is at a high standard so that if we do send them to school next year they'll be at the appropriate level for their ages. I'd rather they are same or slightly ahead than behind the other kids their age. It will hopefully make it easier for them to adjust from one to the other. Thanks, Jo

Hi Ozfamily, I've been homeschooling my children since 7 years in Dubai. Right now, I only have a math Tutor for one of my child. They are all teenagers now, so don't have the same needs as yours, therefore I wouldn't refer him to you. All the other tutors I had have left Dubai now, so right now, I can't confirm you any. But I still have some connections, so if you tell me more precisely who you are looking for, maybe I could search for you. email me with details: tikidxb at gmail

If you are already a member of DUNEHA then do a search on the discussion forum archives and you should find a few tutors mentioned - or just post a new question. If you are not a member ask to join the FB group and post your question there. I have the contact details of one tutor but do not want to post her details here without her permission. Also, there should be a DUNEHA social gathering on January 3rd. These meet ups are a great way to find out how others home educate, with or without tutors.

Thanks for replying Basil & Lina, to answer your questions; yes we are from Australia (thought the oz part would be a bit of a give away), and yes we have contacted Duneha about homeschooling. Yes we have tried to get the kids into a couple of the schools & have a couple more we can try but we are also exploring the homeschool option as its something we've done before in Australia. Do either of you know of any tutors here in Dubai? I'm thinking that we may have a mix of part tutor & part me teaching the kids. I don't know how ill go this time though; last there was only the two kids (and they were young) but now we have the three. Anyway lots to think about and sort out. Jo

Have you been in touch with DUNEHA (Dubai and Northern Emirates Homeschooling Association) yet? The FB page is: http://www.facebook.com/groups/DuneHa/ DUNEHA also has a discussion forum but you need to be a member before you can access it. Once you are a member you can also join the field trips and other activities. HTH, Lina

Looking at our name ,I think you are from OZ. Why are you homeschooling? Can't get into any schools? Shame. The children really do find friends and activities when they are at a school.
