Curious to know, if a single woman gets a housing allowance, then gets married to a man who also receives a housing allowance does one party have to forfeit their allowance - have heard that some wives have had to forgo their allowance, was talking to someone on the plane back this week who told me this.
The answer is very simple:
The contract is signed by 2 parties.
Obviously, no party can make after signature any changes without collecting approval from other party.
Means: Whatever they want to change: It must be mutually agreed.
Pls note: The contract, which is submitted to MoL prevails!
If it says as per handbook / company policy/ grade they can change it. look into the small prints in the contract / company policy. They usually cover themselves legally when they change policies & benefits
The ladies are right, talk to the MoL. They are very helpful.
At the same time, have a friend or colleague look at the Arabic version of your contract, to make sure it tallies with the English one. Some companies are cheeky and make their employees sign 2 different versions.
The Arabic one, that was filed at the MoL, is the one they will take into account.
Thats great advice. I did not know that some companies do that.....
The same goes for landlords with their tenancy contracts..... :(

I guess it depends on how the contract is written. Our contracts states "Housing Allowance as per the policy" So they don't change the contract but the policy.
No they cant. Unless you renewed your contract and it states in the new contract that you will be getting less housing allowance. If they do it otherwise its is a definite breach of contract and against the law and they can be reported to the Ministry of Labour.
Why don't you ask the Ministry of Labor? They are good at answering questions about labor contracts AND you can actually take their advice back to your employer and fight for your rights.
Regardless of any of our experiences with this particular situation, what we say here doesn't really hold any weight. You can't really go back to your employer and say, "But on EW [i'>they[/i'> said it's not allowed..."
I hope I'm not sounding snarky here, I just think when it comes to legal questions you should probably talk to a lawyer or the government department that deals with it. Good luck!
Just wanted to know if my employer is allowed to change my housing allowance stated on my contract ?
The law states that an employer cannot change the terms of an employment contract without the employee’s permission and agreement so if you will be losing out you can make a case at the Ministry of Labour. The ministry is generally very helpful and supportive to employees and you can contact them on 800 665.
