How does one catch E-coli in Dubai?

Hi ladies. Last weekend I was desperately ill and the lab results came back today saying it was an E-coli infection. I am not sure where or how I could have caught it - I dont eat meat or dairy. Am I meant to report to any authority or does the clinic register with the health services? I suppose I would like to know in case it was a particular restaurant. The trouble is I believe that the incubation period is anything between 1-5 days so could have come from anywhere.
But maybe this is much more common than I realise and lots of folk actually get it? I have had food poisoning before and this was quite different.

Had exactly the same symtoms a few months ago, I'm sure it was a salad I ate in a cafe, labs showed bacterial, the doctor said its a typical infection from someone who had not washed their hands probably before touching the lettuce. I'm sure it was that place, which is really popular cafe in MOE but cannot prove it of course. I had not eaten a thing else outside for weeks beforehand and only light well cooked meals at home the days before. It left me with horrible headaches too. Hope you feel better soon. Hi Di... Im suspecting [b'>a quiche in a popular cafe too [/b'>- my Dh has snacked on more or less everything in the kitchen and he is fine (and usually the one who gets sick) And the worst have been the headaches, which continue til today. The doctors should run cultures on all our samples to find out exactly which bug it is as each bug needs slightly different treatment. Im going to be really extra careful from now on. Last year there was a famous E-coli outbreak in Germany but their medical system probably has a shared data system which alerts the authorities immediately if there is a pattern. Whereas I dont think there is that sort of monitoring here in Dubai unless a crop of cases appear at one hospital at the same time. There are probably lots of E-coli cases which dont get diagnosed or reported as such. OMG that's what I ate too, quiche and salad, I'm now even more sure of the source. And I was wondering if anyone else got sick, probably did but as you say there's no system here to monitor this sort of thing.

hilsbils the symptoms you described are exactly the same as what I experienced a few months ago. In the end I am certain the source was a rice and quinoa salad I prepared at home (so completely my fault and thank goodness the children did not have any). But I have never felt so sick and even after a course of antibiotics it took another couple of weeks to come right. I was shaking under piles of duvets too with high fever for days and my system was so traumatised I was just passing blood. Really learnt my lesson when it comes to cooking and storing rice and other grains.

you need to go and to a complete stool analysis, even thought your symptoms may have passed these types of bacteria can do long term damage, as little things lurk in the gut....I should know have had problems with parasites. I submitted the stools for testing on Sunday and the blood tests came back that there was definitely a bacterial infection so I was given anti-biotics. But the stools have been tested/cultured for 3 days now and they got this more detailed result. Or do you mean I should be tested after the antibiotics are finished to see if it lingers? edited by hilsbils on 03/10/2012

So just when you think you're eating the healthiest of foods, you find out you're actually getting a healthy dose of sh*t. :\:

Cooked Rice is a carrier, especially if reheated and not stored properly.

I didnt have watermelon in the past week. It can take up to 10 days to incubate ! But at little as 1. My mates and Dh who I have eaten at home or out in restaurants with didnt get sick so am presuming it was a snack I had on my own at home - maybe a salad or so.

Remember there was an ecoli problem not too long ago with watermelon... think it was in the States and Canada. Could it be that?

So it could be veggies.... hmm. I dont eat eggs/milk/ red meat very often so was wondering how and where. When Ive had chicken/food poisoning before it was mainly violent v-timg and runs, but this involved a cold fever (I couldnt get warm - was under 2 duvets and wearing a fleece, shivering etc) and intense abdominal and lower back pain and cramps and bad diarrhea. I also had a migraine which has remained. My main concern is perhaps there are a handful of folk who caught it at the same time and it may be a restuarant or food product that needs investigating here in Dubai. Would hate it if it can be avoided/ stopped.

if the vegetation is grown too close to where cattle are roaming then it is easy for cross contamination. There was a massive outbreak in the USA a few years ago, spread via pre-washed and packaged Spinach....which had cow poop draining into the irrigation system. So bad it was, so always wash your veggies in clorox or Milton.
