Once you enter on your entry visa, you or whoever is processing your visa will have done the typing for your Emirates ID card and your Medical. This printed paper for Emirates ID has a bar code on it and you can use this (make copies of it) to process your Driving License etc, once your visa comes through. You don't need to wait for the physical ID card, but you will need to wait for your UAE visa (which will not take long now that your entry permit is already processed).

Dear OP\ You dont need to wait until your ID card comes through :) You just need the piece of paper that has the bar code on it. You'll be able to get your DL tomorrow. Don't forget to get DH to sign your form. :) Can you please clarify which paper you are talking about here? I am moving to Dubai on Sunday and want to speed up things for the driving license... So far, all I have is my DL from Denmark + international license + 'pink slip' for my entry visa.

Apparently you can't drive in the UAE with a UK licence if you are a resident. You need to get your local licence. We have a hire car that DH is taking to work and is sitting in the staff car park all day while I have a million and one errands to run! You can drive a hire car on a UK license, you just can't drive a privately owned car. Double check with the car rental company but unless things have changed you should be fine.

I also drove a rented car as soon as I got here, but I think at that time emirates I.d. wasn't mandatory. I really think it's ok to drive one on a foreign license while you're waiting.

Can you not hire one on your current one? Apparently you can't drive in the UAE with a UK licence if you are a resident. You need to get your local licence. The time seems to vary. You can check on your application status or ask on live chat here: http://www.id.gov.ae/en/home.aspx Thanks Daza, I have read that it can take up to a month - not sure how I will cope for that long! Now that it is heating up the walk to the main road near my house for a taxi is getting harder and harder.
