Hi Ladies

Colleague planning her wedding and is discussing how much she should budget for the photographer. Before she rings round every business in town, I said "Expatwoman might know!!" (my standard response to most questions these days, LOL)

If you've used such a service here and don't mind saying how much you paid, that would be most helpful. The poor girl is in a bit of a panic sorting everything...

Thanks in advance, as always :)

AED 8,500 for 10 hours x2 photographers I am in the wrong business - thats a massive monthly wage if say doing 2 weddings a week. I had to add a comment about this Clairehdp :) Yes this price does sound like a lot, but take that figure and divide it by 2 (2 photographers). Then say you book 3-4 weddings a month. That's 4250 x 4 (if you are fully booked!) = 17000. Then start subtracting. Subtract the trade licence fee and desk fees a photographer pays every month (the legal ones, I am) - 2850AED, subtract website and SEO fees, about 2000AED a month, marketing material - business cards, pamphlets, cd covers, prints, frames, etc etc, about 1500AED, continual gear costs - if you are a professional your gear averages around 40-60000AED and you are always buying more lights, reflectors, batteries, props, laptops, hard drives, screens, memory cards ETC ETC. If I average gear costs a month, I pay about 3000AED a month into all that. That leaves about 7500AED profit. That does not include assistant fees, take another 2 grand off. Take off about 2-3 months of wedding bookings over the summer where you don't earn an income because everyone has gone away. That leaves you with enough money to cover rent and food. It's really tough being a photographer, it's not glam at all. It's hard work, long hours, late nights, no paid holidays, no paid sick leave, no benefits. It's dedication and hours and hours of marketing and tests and emails and phone calls. I've been a photographer for over 10 years, so I know what it's all about. You will know a professional when you meet one, and it's that that you need to pay that money for :) There are a lot of chancers out there and people who think they are photographers because they went and bought themselves a 5D Mark II, but the proof is in the pudding. The portfolio says it all. Anyone still wanting to be a photographer out there? :) well said! and there are so many illegal/cowboy photographers in this town.... edited by kelly1814 on 21/11/2012

lol exactly!!! I looked like a truck ran over me. I remember eating a couple of cupcakes for breakfast, then putting on the biggest, darkest, sunglasses I had, and my DH and I then crawled to meet my cousins for migas and mambo taxis. Didn't really want to capture that moment :) that is a really good idea, your sister should take you up on that! I may do that myself! edited to add sorry for hijacking the thread, I am not being helpful :/ edited by Beebers on 09/08/2012

If my sister's wedding was anything to go by, the day after your wedding is when you've eaten everything you can reach and you are pretty hungover and tired and both emotionally and physically exhausted. I've tried to convince my sister to get back into her dress a year later to do beauty shots, but she is resisting.... There just isn't enough time on the day, but the day after is rather sadistic!

Beebers that it ridiculous! you would have to pay for her hotel? hmm.... she's taking something alright! I know! She actually lived 3 hours away from the location, so I could understand if she was working really late--but in the near vicinity there were a slew of hotels that didn't cost $400 a night for a room. She asked to have a room booked for the [b'>weekend[/b'> !! What was weird is that she couldn't fathom that we didn't want to rise and shine the night after our wedding for an early photo shoot. Maybe some people are into this stuff, but it was sounding rather Kardashian to me!!

Yes Beebers, that is taking the mickey, but a lot of couples wouldn't know better. Sadly, when it comes to weddings, people go to the extremes. But that being said, there is a lot of pressure on a photographer for a wedding. If you don't like the work they produce, there is no going back, so people will pay a premium. That's exactly it. You would know, being a photographer, and I'll bet that some brides get extra snippy about their special day being preserved exactly the way they want it to. It is an art, that is for sure, and I can remember my days of makeup artistry and the bridal makeup I did. I was nervous a week before their appointment! There is a fine line between excellent photographers, and those who are very pesty and ruin the moment more than they enhance it. It wasn't just the price with this particular gal, she tried to convince us to put her up in the same hotel we were spending the night in after the reception, and wake up early the next day to take more photos, telling me I would look back and regret it if the entire weekend wasn't on film, pretty much. I laughed out loud when I read her emails!

We had gotten a quote for over 10,000 dhs, for two HOURS. please! This was in the states. She also tried to pressure us into letting her put the photos up on her facebook albums, after we expressed our desire for privacy. I got tired of it, going back and forth with her so close to the wedding, I just told her thanks, but never, thanks. We passed around my father-in-law's high quality Nikon in between friends, took serious pictures during vows, and candids throughout the party---and I don't regret that at all! Better than the pictures from my sister's wedding...with no b.s.

I'm a photographer, and have photographed a couple of weddings for Family and for each hour of the wedding I photographed, it took easily another 7/8 hours to edit. Lots of work involved, however, saying that, as soon as you add the word "wedding" to anything the price goes up because people want to pay for peace of mind and perfection

I have no idea what they charge but the wedding photos from Ugly Duckling Photography is stunning AED 8,500 for 10 hours x2 photographers I am in the wrong business - thats a massive monthly wage if say doing 2 weddings a week. To be fair they will have to do prep work, take brief, it's usually a long, demanding day, and then there's all the post production work on the images afterwards...rather them than me! Have passed all this to my colleague - who is now an EW convert!

i KNEW you ladies would be fabulous! Coffee mate - did this include an initial briefing meeting or did that cost extra? No, they didn't charge for an initial meeting. We did meet them, told them what we wanted and then they provided a quote based on that. That price does not include the album though. We're paying extra for the coffee table type album.

hi kelly... i'm a wedding planner so can probably offer your friend some advice in this matter... :) an average contemporary wedding photographer would charge from AED 600 upwards per hour... and you would need to book them for a minimum of 6hrs (of course you can always negotiate for shorter or longer times) some photographers offer a whole package... that usually includes two photographers and also a wedding album with selected number of images... my suggestion would be to select a photographer who will give you all the days images on CD... honestly some higher end photographers will charge you per image... and that can get quite pricey!! one of my favourite wedding photographers are a couple that run their service under the name Melrish Photography (they also offer videography services)... if you like their style and rates I'd be more than pleased to send them an email on ur behalf so that you can use the extra discount they normally extend to planners like me...
