After doing some research on the internet I decided to go with the natural soloutions. I got some tea-tree oil, some "Ionil T" Shampoo, which is a coal tar treatment, which has Salicyclic Acid in it, which apprently they dont like. And listerine, yes listerine. Apparently they hate the stuff. I got a lice comb as well. So I sprayed her head with a mixture if listerine, a bit of water, 5 drops of tea-tree oil and left it on for about 10 mins. Then I shampooed it off with their normal shampoo with some tea tree oil drops in it. Then I re-shampooed with the Ionil T and left that on as instructed for 5 mins. Rinsed it out and smothered her head with conditioner and a few drops of tea tree oil. Then I started combing, and combing. I must have got about 50 lice out - all dead.eeeeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwwwwww. Poor thing was crawling with them. I put more of the conditioner on and tea tree oil and sent her to bed. (put a towel down in her bed to avoid mess. I did the same thing for her sister, but she strangely didn't have any. then it was my turn - I have them too:\: - double euuuuuuuuwwwwwww. So after combing and combing I now have a thick layer of conditioner and tea tree oil on my head and a shower cap on!! Looking fwd to a good shampoo tomorrow. I was hoping they'd be in nursery this week as I'm full of the flu but I dont think I'll be able to send them back till i know they're clear. thanks all for your ideas and information!!

I've seen Robi Comb on Amazon, it says $25 but since mine was the 1st or 2nd version I'm not sure how they are now (ours is about 10 years old)

It's ok, it grew back ;) At the time I was devastated of course, but now I keep it shorter because having such long hair is not very practical if you work. Not to mention in this heat. I've had it shorter for about 6 years now.

Ugh, I got them CONSTANTLY during high school, to the point my mother considered home-schooling me for the remainder a it just because too much... I had very long hair which I wore up- problem was other parents couldn't be bothered treating their kids so I just kept getting them back again and again. Eventually I had to lop off my much loved hair as poor mum literally spent DAYS trying to get them out of my long enough-to-sit-on hair. FInally we did the hair colour thing, and we also bought a Robi-Comb which is an electronic zapper comb. It won't remove eggs but will kill the adults, so it was good to use between treatments. I got so sick from all of the chemicals used that it was our last resort. I still use it now whenever I feel like I might be itchy, just in case. Haven't had them since I've been here, thank goodness! Second also the tea-tree shampoo, it smellws gross but helps the itching and prevent infection. I had bad cuts/bites by the end and my dr put us onto using it. Oh, your lovely hair :( I wonder if you can get the Robi-comb here?

It used to be the job of the school nurse to check children's heads until the PC brigade stuck their noses in! If an outbreak was found, parents were informed by letter.Headlice have been around for ever and it is almost inevitable that children of nursery and school age will catch them at some stage in their school years. As a student nurse I was forever catching fleas. lice etc much to my mother's horror. Plenty of treatments around now but the blighters are survivors!!

And what's really frustrating when when you put all that work into getting your kids lice-free and they come home the next week with them again because someone else still has them. Do make sure you tell the nursery they've come home with lice and that you've treated yours so they can inform other parents. Urgh YES! My DD's nursery asked not to send in children until any lice had gone whereas the school just says to start treatment. I HATE seeing girls with long hair falling about everywhere when 1) Lice are prevalant and 2) school rules say tie it back. I really wish they'd enforce the tying back of har - it actually makes me ill seeing young children with long hair not tied back - swimming with all that hair - eww sorry, I just hate it and for children it's so impractical

Yes I've heard that works too, hope I dont have to go down that road though! As I'm sure it would sting her scalp as she's been scratching so much. Just updating. This morning I woke up after having soaked their heads in conditioner and tea tree oil over night and gave them a shampoo with the Ionil T. Left it in for 5 mins then sprayed their heads again with vinegar and tea tree oil, put some conditioner in to make combing easier and proceeded to comb. I didn't get as many as yesterday - adult ones about 3 but dozens of tiny baby ones - eggs, i have no idea as it's hard to tell with the conditioner coming out in the comb too. Then I shampooed again with the Ionil T and conditioned. I left their hair to almost dry fully and gave them a quick comb again - this time with a metal comb which one of the very kind expat ladies got for me today, and it's so much easier and quicker and much more efficient. I still got heaps of tiny, almost microscopic ones :(. But at least they're all dead. plan for later today before they go to bed is to spray them again with listerine and tea tree oil and get to combing again. UGGGGGGhhhhhhh what a hassle this is!! I hope to send them back to nursery tomorrow. fingers crossed!

As a last resort, when all other effort has failed, get yourself a boxed home-kit hair colour and the lice don't stand a chance. In Cambodia, at least once a month there will be a notice on hair lice at the international school. My daughter had one very persistent infestation, 3 weeks and not budging despite daily dousing of all the lice shampoos, combing etc and other chemicals off the shelves from pharmacy. I searched the internet and saw some recommendation to use hair colour. I tried it on her and voila.. the colony was eradicated and daughter was happy with her new hair colour.

Exile!! OMG! I hope I can help with what to do! but thanks for bringing up this subject, I guess we should all be aware of what could happen with our kids out there at nurseries and schools regarding health and personal hygine issues. my son would've freaked out if such a thing happened to him!! good luck and be careful that your other daughter and you don't catch it! I've caught them too Almazd!! It's horrible!! I've read that a good thing to do is to spray your childs hair with a mixture of mostly water and a few drops of tea tree oil and peppermint oil as a deterrent. The lice dont like the smell of it and so keep away!!

Oh, Exile, you poor thing. It's horrific enough when you're feeling well.. Interesting that only one of your daughters has them. We think ours got hers in the first place from a borrowed horse-riding hat at a stables where she was taking lessons. Despite all our efforts, because other children in her class were not treated, she had lice on and off for a few years. You need to make sure the whole class is alerted and taking steps to get rid of them.

Yes if I wasnt feeling so ill I'd be laughing too!! It's been full on!! I sent the girls to bed with shower caps on initially - they looked so darn cute, then I decided it may not be safe, a suffocation risk. I guess this is one of the many beauties of motherhood I have to look fwd to!
