suze63... the alternative being the OP's husband would be jailed till the maid delivers a baby... then of course she would be wiser to get her tested!! I somehow feel this does not happen in most cases because I have heard of maids being sent back because they got pregnant during their vacations. Maybe if the maid claimed "r***", but otherwise I dont think every sponsor who has a pregnant maid is jailed till birth. edited by Arch on 11/07/2013

If you are feeling a bit funny about the whole husband staying over and not sure now I think it will be far worse when he is in the house. with you living in an apartment too, you will bump into him and stuff and me personally wouldnt be comfortable with this. esp on the weekends when i want to roam around in my pyjamas and cami. do you even have a double bed to accomodate the guy in her room ?

Test her as soon as she returns and if she is pregnant then send her home. Are you actually speaking about a human being here? It doesn't sound like it. What if she doesn't wanted to be "tested"?

Now I am getting worried! My maid has just gone back to the Philippines to get married. She may or may not come back with a honeymoon pregnancy. We as her employers/sponsors are fine with that but what are the laws and regulations regarding our position and hers? What about hospital appointments? Feel like a whole can of worms has been opened. it is not allowed for a maid to be pregnant (which is why there is a pregnancy test involved in the sponsorship process), so if she is pregnant you need to send her home asap. edited by Purple on 11/07/2013 It is my understanding that married maids can be pregnant (after vacations etc) but cannot give birth or sponsor their child here. From what I understand, if she is pregnant, she can continue to work up to the time that she can safely fly home to give birth. She can then return or not, to work for you, depending if she wants to leve her baby with a carer in her home country as many do. Maybe you need to check this point with Immigration.

If your husband is the sponsor and your maid falls pregnant, then he will be held accountable. . Is this hearsay or is there some actual law saying the employer is punished if the maid falls pregnant ? there have been cases where the DH has been jailed until the birth of the baby to prove paternity plus in the eyes of the law, you are supposed to be protecting her as she is away from her own family, and the law here states that you should take care of her under Islamic law as she is living in your residence and working for you.

It is illegal, so that is the end of that. Why would it be illegal when they are legally married? Our maid's husband is here, we asked her for the marriage certificate at the beginning and now he comes at the weekends and stays overnight then. We actually really appreciate him as he then does all the odd jobs in the house. However, our maid is on the older side and falling pregnant is definitely not an issue anymore. What you're doing is double illegal. He is not allowed to stay in your house as you don't sponsor him plus he is working for you illegally. I would not allow it it can get you into serious trouble. I don't see why it would be doubly illegal when it's helping not working. It would be illegal, when one pays money for the work received. I find it quite amazing how little freedom one allows the maid and on the other hand expects everything in return. One always sees very clearly the right and wrong with maids but eyes are always closed to the laws relating to madam and sir. Says who? Who says eyes are closed to the laws when it comes to employers? Maids seem to know it very well. If you're not paying the guy it won't be illegal then but at the end of the day there are laws and the law says he can't stay with her in your house. It's not about what we think is acceptable it's about what the law dictates as acceptable.

Cleopatra, in the eyes of the law she is a domestic servant. Nowadays it is normal to pay your servants a salary and give them some basic human rights. If you wish to give them more, that is ok too, BUT, do not bring western values into this equation. There are laws, they are set in place to protect the employee as well as the employer. If for example the husband of a maid was to molest a resident of the household, then you would be prosecuted, yes you. If your husband is the sponsor and your maid falls pregnant, then he will be held accountable. You are allowed visitors to come and stay in your home. You are entitled to a liquor permit (if you are a non-muslim). You are allowed to argue your employment contract at the labor court. You are allowed many more things, but your maid is not allowed any of the above.

Another thought on the issue: if the couple have been here for a while, they will certainly have made "their own arrangements" previously. You are not being unreasonable not permitting this to happen in your home and to be honest with you, they would not expect it. In fact, you should not permit those you sponsor to sleep outside your home either. Remember, you are responsible for her while she is sponsored by you. The authorities will ask YOU why, not her, should any questions be asked.

Because only your family and those you sponsor can stay in your house. yep legally here only people that you sponsor or your own close family members can be living in your house otherwise its illegal. I would only class it as visiting if the husband stays at weekends only and if this is classed as illegal in that case friends and family on visit visa would not be allowed either, or is that incorrect.

As Crashingwaves has said, it is completely illegal and there is no grey area in this matter. Both she and her husband know this, so, if they try to negotiate visits or overnights with you, they are just "trying one on" with you. If you allow it, you will be putting yourself in a very serious legal situation as well as your maid. Don't do it! The law is very clear as to who can be in your house.

Hi all, we are considering hiring a new nanny, seems lovely. Her husband is also here. She would live with us. How have other people handled "conjugal" (did i spell that right?) visits? We have two young daughters, and live in a 2+ apartment. My gut says visiting ok, but not crazy about the idea of overnights. Wondering how others have delt with this, have not had a conversation, no idea what her expectations are. TIA! Why would you get yourself into such a situation like that? No visitors, and no overnight stay for him in your house, or her in his house.
