its the cultural thing. in countries with hot climate(subcontinent, ME) everyone including children usually take an afternoon nap coz its too hot to do anything. back in the old days when there was no air conditioning, everything would close down in the afternoon. none of the kids i know sleep at 7 in my country!
The 7.30 pm bedtime for my kids is not so much dictated by how many hours sleep they 'should' have, it's more about adult time and getting some peace and quiet which quite frankly, saves my sanity most days.
How do you ladies who put your kids to bed at 10.00pm manage to have any meaningful time to yourself? Is it not important that your children know that you are allowed some downtime too and that means kids in bed 3 hours before you are.
I'm not trying to be judgemental, I'm genuinely curious about when you recharge your parenting batteries....
For me the afternoon time is the ultimate blisssssss :)
and i never sleep before midnight ... so get 4 hours to charge my batteries exactly ;)

We don't recharge our batteries. Just like the duracell bunny that goes on and on and on and.......
agree that we shouldnt lose our manners... but honestly people all over the world (and not just dubai) go beserk fighting for seats or spots at any show... i've been to amusement parks, concerts, and even free street shows world over... and nearly everywhere u get the occasional pushing and shoving... add to this the number of tourists that have also flocked MOE (due to holidays in the subcontinent) and you get total chaos...
the mall management could have ideally secured off the area... but they seem to enjoy all the commotion... why else would they not seal off the area to regular shoppers... with the current setup, you have the enclosed area, plus people milling around, plus loads of shoppers from Carrefour trying to push their way to create an aisle to walk out of the arena!!
but heh... remember FREE show... so come prepared! :)
and to janesul - about the me time... well i usually sleep much later (only by 11-ish) so get a good hour or so to watch some telly, chat with the hubby, etc... i personally don't feel the need for so much 'me' time and i'd rather trade this in for 'more family time' as i work full time and only reach home by 6:30 which gives me just around two to three hours within which to feed, shower, read to and play with my daughter before she nods off to bed :)
In our case, growing up my parents owned their own separate businesses and would pick us up from school at 6pm. Then dinner at 7 or 7:30. We didn't even get home until 9. So in our house we are used to eating dinner late.
I think it's a lot situational and we shouldn't really wag our fingers at people that do things differently. It's like saying what's better soothing or cry it out? It's what works best for your family because we are all wired differently.
Now for the adults standing and taking up room from the kids at the Mickey show, that's just abominable!

don't understand the reasoning behind saying it's a FREE show, so one shouldnt complain much? Just because it's free is no earthly reason for people to lose their manners and common courtesy? What kind of example are these pushy rude parents giving their small people, hmmm?
I refuse to comment on kids up after 9 on a school night.
yes ladies... let's not be too judgemental on what time parents put their kids to sleep... a substantial number of asian & arab kids do not sleep as early as 7pm... most have later bedtimes for many reasons, such as,
- they may have taken an afternoon nap for a few hours
- they start school late (afternoon shift)
- they are on a school break at the moment (all indian curriculum schools, for example, are on their 3 week annual holiday)
i'm indian... and my lil one (who just turned 4) goes to a montessori school that runs from 8:30am till 12:30pm... she sleeps from 1:30pm to 3:30pm in the afternoon 'coz she's so pooped from all the running and jumping at school... she's then up and about till around 9:30pm when she hits the bed again...
unfortunately in Dubai, in most households, the majority of the parents both work which leaves them with no choice but to chart kids off for shows once they return back home which is usually after 6:30pm on a weekday (if traffic's not too bad!)
understandable that there is a lot of pushing and shoving going on at the show... just each fighting for a chance for their child to be able to catch a glimpse of the show from a vantage point... it's a FREE show so we can't really complain...
if you go well in advance (at least an hour earlier like we did) and queue up to take your seat within the enclosed area it's not too bad at all...
I was wondering the same thing? What kind of parent takes their kids to 7+9pm shows? These things should be during the day.
agreed that the shows should be during the day but a lot of women dont drive and fathers usually dont get home before 7 or 8 pm ... besides if the kids take an afternoon nap of 2 hours its not really bad to keep them awake till 10 as they are still getting the advised 10 hours of sleep
Last night the "show" for me was watching some of the parents! The fighting, yelling, pushing, pushing to put their small children over the blockade and forcing so called nannies to sit in the children's section up front who would stand. The women next to me was taken away by 3 security men while we all listened to her vulgar language being screamed.
Sorry to be a downer, the show itself was lovely. And I am not sure if they could have improved the venue but some of the parents were alarming. I would suggest going 45minutes early
I would never take my children to this type of thing for two reasons: way too crowded and starts too late. I'd rather pay and have a reserved seat at a children's show. I cannot compete with pushers and shovers and wouldn't want my DDs to feel disappointed that they saw nothing.
While on this subject WHY OH WHY do they put on KIDS shows at 7pm & 9pm??!!
So that the grown men and women can push the children out of the way to secure their own space in front and film the show on their mobile phones and cameras (which they'll promptly delete without watching even 1 time) OF COURSE. :\:
Thanks both! em2san yes, my kids are 3 1/2 & 2yrs 3mths so should be fun for them!, I'll check out the other thread too.
While on this subject WHY OH WHY do they put on KIDS shows at 7pm & 9pm??!! My kids are in the bath & bed then....what is wrong with this place in 'organising' KIDS shows.....if they put shows on during the day for the younger ones when the older kids were @ school then maybe the 4.30 show would not be so packed......mind boggles every time! Who takes their kids to a 9pm show on a school night!
i did lol .... but we were desperate :D

You should be there at least an hour before the actual show starts to get a good place. And considering the age of your children, I think it'll be a good outing for them - Have fun :)
Also, there is another thread on the show if you want to check out what other people said

went for it... totally worth it! lovely show!
but for the 4:30 show you need to be sitting within the secured area by at least b 3:30... tends to be very very very very very busy...
all the best... enjoy the show! last two days i believe!
