Hi ladies, I'm new to the forum (although I've been reading it for weeks!!).

I'm 28,live in Scotland and moving in April for 2 years (moving through my husband's work). Can't wait to move somewhere with sunshine all year round!

I've also just found out I'm pregnant so have even more to sort along with the house move!

Would love to get some advice about what I should sort out before I come over and what I should take with me. I've been doing research but nothing beats speaking to people who have went through relocating themselves.

Any advice is appreciated xx

Not sure if I agree with suggesting that you buy all the baby stuff and you are just 8 weeks. I wouldn't (and I didn't..when i moved here way back when i was pregnant too, like you a few weeks). The sales here are very good - you can get good baby things from cots to clothes in the sale. Granted, sale means nearer UK price rather then cheap. Also, what is likelihood that you'll be going back to Scotland during your 9 months? if you are sure you'll be going back, I'd hold off and do baby shopping later.

Thanks Pentel - I've heard mixed reports about baby stuff in Dubai. I heard there's a big baby shop in Mall of the Emirates which is good for cots etc - is it still better to buy in the UK? I'm scared to start buying stuff for shipping over because I'm only 8 weeks. Miss Balamory do you get Irn Bru in Dubai?!!! That's what I know I'll miss most (after friends and family of course!)

congrats on the pregnancy and your move, just to reiterate what others have said.. get EVERYTHING for your pregnancy and the baby in the UK, particularly so if your DH's new company are paying for shipping. every single thing you can think of connected to pregnancy or babies is much more expensive in Dubai, get your cot and pram and ship them over - more choice in the UK and much, much cheaper!

Wow cousland, small world! Gullane is a lovely little village! We always went there for some fish and chips and a stroll along the beach! Miss things like that, can't seem to find a decent chip shop here! :)

I think I looked at every "blip" in East Lothian when we were house hunting a few years ago. We bought in Gullane eventually although it is not where we are from originally.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, it's such a nice friendly forum!! Magicbeanza, I think the roundabout you're talking about is the one at Port Glasgow - I still can't get used to it! I thought it might be more expensive for baby stuff in Dubai, will make sure I stock up before I come out. We're looking at the marina area for renting, would like to be near restaurants/shops. I'll be over from 10th February - 17th (staying in the Hilton Jumeirah Beach) so I'll keep my eye out for any upcoming events. Thanks again x I googled it to make sure of my facts LOL... A78 Inverkip Rd where it joins A770 Clough Rd.... I enjoyed working on that job, it was through the winter and it snowed often and our site office was next to the horses, so I would always go give them my apple during lunch.

Hi, I'm also Scottish, moved here 3 months ago from East Lothian and also lived here for a bit in 2008. It is a bit of a shock weather wise thats for sure and it takes a while to settle in and meet friends but you'll get there in the end. I find it hard meeting mums my age (27) but as you are pregnant it might be easier for you. I had my little boy here in 2009 and the medical care etc was excellant! Just get yourself out and about and you'll meet some lovely people. Drop me a line if you want to chat or ask anything, be happy to help. sjonesathotmaildotcom in my 4 yrs in London, I have never run into anyone close to my age with a baby. I'm excited to run into people my own age with rugrats :) !

hi Lad! I'm moving to Dubai from London (but I'm originally American) I'm a mommy and I'm around your age (26)! I think we'll be most likely looking to live in the Marina area too, but still not sure. Definitely in the New Dubai area. Welcome and CONGRATULATIONS!

Hey welcome and congrats on your pregnancy!! There are plenty of us Scots in Dubai so won't be long before you hear a familiar accent, I'm from Ayrshire (doon the watter) tho lived in Glasgow for a few years! I already had DD before we moved out but definitely second all the comments about stocking up on baby gear/clothes before you come, is way more cheaper in the UK especially for all your basics like baby gro's, sleepsuits etc. And if you can buy your bigger baby items in the Scotland and get it shipped over then that might be worth doing too - from what I gather prams, cots, etc are all more expensive here! Do you know where you are going to be living yet or where DH will be based? Anyway just to say hello and maybe will get to meet you when you get here (happy to be part of the welcoming party Maid Marion :) )

Hi and welcome. I am originally from south africa but lived in scotland for a few years and then moved here to Dubai. I built that big new roundabout just outside Greenock, I think on the A84 (can't remember the number now) back in 2004. I lived in Glasgow and drove through Greenock every day for about a year :) Congrats on your pregnancy. All the best with your upcoming move and adventures!

A warm welcome to EW. Lots of people here to give you some good advise. Please rmeember its very very hot here in summer, not so pleasant, especially if you are going to be heavily pregnant. Also please ensure your DH company health insurance already covers you with immediate effect as you are already pregnant.

Thanks for the replies, loads of good info there to help me. I'm from Greenock which is not far from Glasgow. I'm coming out for a week in Feb, then moving out officially in the middle of April. I've heard the summers are extremely hot, it will be even more of a shock to me since I come from one of the wettest places in Britain. I'll definitely go along to the coffee mornings, sounds like a good way to meet people. Dubai and pregnancy/babies is completely new to me so I'll be glad to get all the advice I can! Thanks x You'll soon get used to the weather, l'm back in Greenock at the moment and struggling with the cold.....looking forward to getting back to the Sand Pit in a few weeks and saying Cheerio the noo to Rainy Inverclyde
