so after reading everything(and not realizing it was an old post) i was going to comment to just pay for it, it happens and she has been with you a long time... then i read about it happening again and realized it was an old post... BUT... it would really pis* me off if it were my maid (i dont have one... lol) and she went and called my husband after i told her to pay something. (if im reading right, that is what happened) that is like my child asking for candy before dinner and i say no so he goes and asks my husband as if my word isnt final or he will get a different answer.

Now that she has had to pay for it I have no doubt whatsoever that the problem is now solved and will never happen again.

If I were to say that this happened again while we were away, you would think I was making this up!! It did and this time she paid - she called my dh and told him that it had happened - trying for the sympathy vote. :\:

And I am not making this up - within 15 mins of me posting the previous , she was outside again with the same potential situation where she could have been locked out! It is all to do with security on a sliding door. What do you have to do - really??? I suppose my one consolation is that I know my security bar on the sliding doors work !

Well I have mulled over this for a while - my husband said pay the 200 dhs for goodwill etc but he has no idea of other things broken etc recently ( he just sees the good side of a maid) ...anyhow she asked me for the money yesterday so I gave her it today. I did say to her " next time you will have to pay yourself".......It was amazing the change that came over her face then as this is the first time in 10 years I have suggested any kind of payment. So let's see what happens now - maybe a bit more care at times.

If she has been with you for 10+ years and this is the first time she has locked herself out of the house, I would definitely pay it. It's just one of those things which can happen to the best of us.

If you decide she should be held responsible, I think you should charge the full amount. Then it's pretty straightforward - she caused the expense, she covers it, simple and fair. By paying half yourself you'd signal it's not about her actual fault/responsibility but more about teaching her a lesson which - I think - might just cause more anger and frustration. As someone else said you can always 'reimburse' the 200 dhs later on by paying her a bonus for good work or extra effort.

I would also be worried that she gave a set of keys to somebody else. Having thought about this a bit more since my last post, I would actually charge her the entire 200 AED and then get the locks changed again at your convenience so that you know where all the keys are!!!! edited by derien on 28/05/2012 Why would she need to get locks changed to give someone a set of keys? She could just copy the ones she has! There are 3 keys with the new lock and I believe this is the standard amount - at least that is what I got when I had the lock changed before.

in that case, pay up and tell her to NEVER do it again. ETA: and tell her that she has another 10 years to go to win your trust again.....:\: edited by CAPTAIN AMERICA !! on 28/05/2012

Smelling. A. Rat. That is kind of true but SM's maid has been with her for a very long time if I am not mistaken. Yes she has been with us 10 + years. While she lacks common sense at times she is an honest Christian woman who knows what side her bread is buttered on. I know others have been burnt in this way though.

There are a few things that concern me about this. The first one is that the locksmiths are not supposed to change locks without the owner present, so they have broken the law and can be fined for this, or lose their license. 2nd thing, is that you may have chosen a different company and gotten a different price than her, who knows? 3rd thing, is her attitude, she needs her brain whipping up, and quick. I suggest that you make sure that she knows how unhappy you are, and start leaving maid cv's around the coffee table area.....keep her on her toes. ETA: if anyone brought a locksmith into my home to change locks, I would fire them instantly. This is not for them to choose. edited by CAPTAIN AMERICA !! on 28/05/2012 She called security and they called a locksmith and police were also called to verify it all! Sponsorship etc etc..all correct and according to procedure. What was she supposed to do? Live outside until I got back and let the animals inside starve to death?

It's too bad to think that you can't even trust someone after all those years...:( Yes it is. I am still surprised at how I read on EW how much people trust their maids....some of them really do not care.

Smelling. A. Rat. That is kind of true but SM's maid has been with her for a very long time if I am not mistaken. Sadly, in some cases, this does not signify much. I know of someone whose houseboy of 11 years cleaned out their whole house, and I mean of [i'>everything[/i'>, when they went on holiday one year! It's too bad to think that you can't even trust someone after all those years...:( They were totally shocked but tracked him down in SL as they knew the village he lived in. Can't remember what the outcome was though.

IMO it is a very good idea to have her pay half the bill. Because it is a huge amount to her, it may make her think twice about her actions in the future. And if you notice improvement in her behavior, you can always refund the 100 lateron, as an extra bonus or something.

We very recently put our maid's salary up to over 2000 AED per month. I sware the day after we did that, I saw an attitude change in her... and not for the better. Arghhhhh edited by derien on 28/05/2012
