I *believe* that the authorities have already closed the road from SZR to BAA. Which road do you mean?

Holy smoke. OK Dubai Mall has just been scratched. Thanks ladies for your very valuable information I had no idea about pre-purchased parking tickets. Where do they advertise these things???? I guess we'll head to a beach then as DH is convinced we need to go somewhere! I just have nightmares about being stuck in a 3 hour traffic jam and needing to go pee :-/ Next request for info please: what time do you think we should aim to get to the beach (probably Umm Suqeim public or Kite Beach?)

We were landing just before midnight last year and saw all the fireworks from Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Marina all the way on Emirates Road on the way home to Rances, it was amazing :)

Dentro: So if you were heading down to Dubai Mall to watch the fireworks and going by car, what time would you need to get there to get a park and what time do the fireworks start? Do people take rugs to sit on while they wait for it to start? How long do you expect it would take to get out of there and up Al Khail road home to the Meadows area? I know they're requesting everyone to be in Downtown Dubai by 8pm. Since yesterday morning, just about all parking has already been blockaded (*all* parking here for tonight, not just Dubai Mall, I believe must be prepaid) and it's been a general nightmare. When I left work yesterday it took me AGES to get out of the Downtown area, that was at 6pm, not even on NYE. I dread going home after work tonight. Working here, I've some info to my place of work to prepare for tonight: *Road closures in the area from 8pm. Expect the entire Downtown Area to be closed off from sometime between 9-10pm. Road closures do not only include Emaar Blvd, but also Financial Center Rd and Doha St, and side roads throughout all of the general Downtown area and neighborhoods. *"Light residue" (ie. fire warnings) from the fireworks display has been noted as a warning to businesses with outdoor terraces in Stand Point, The Lofts, The Residences, Claren, Boulevard Central, and Boulevard Plaza. From 11:30pm-12:45am business' terraces/seating in these areas will be covered and/or closed. Just something to consider, I suppose! A colleague has been downtown the past year or 2 for NYE, and she lives in Nad Al Sheba, said leaving as soon as the events finished, it took her until appx 3:30am to get home.

I went to Dubai Mall yesterday with my two. The fountain area around the Burj is going to be spectacular, they have set it up and you could see all the props, but..... it was jam packed at 6.30pm for the fountain show, the busiest I've seen it for a while, lots of tourists. The metro was busy as well, as they have opened the bridge between the metro station and the mall which is a real advantage. I personally wouldn't take my kids up there tonight, but if you are brave enough then I'm sure it's gonna be a good show. I would take the metro and leave the car at home, mind you if you do probably would be best to buy a Gold card I think..:)

We tried Burj Khalifa two years back and gave up as it was chaos, and sounds like more may come tonight. Try the beach at Burj al Arab instead and watch their fireworks, and see BK and Atlantis in the distance, but don't park on or near Jumeirah Beach Road, it's always gridlocked before and after.

I was driving along Meydan Road yesterday and there were signs pointing down the road to the new cycling track up there saying burj khalifa parking - might be worth checking out what that was about

I am really considering if I want to go to this or not. The traffic sounds like a nightmare and I really wonder if the crowds will be so bad that my 9 year old won't be able to see anything... however I want to do something special as we did nothing last year. I just don't know...

Difficult to predict what's best, as they improve it every year. Two years ago cars could not move and those who took the metro were the winners. So last year everyone tried to take the metro, it was a massacre, while cars moved out relatively ok. Not sure what's best really. edited by dentro on 30/12/2012

Yeah, you def can't see everything, I hated not being there cuz there's a whole show that goes on at the bottom which is all part of the experience.but there's no way I could have gone early enough to be there nor do I want to get stuck afterwards. This time, I'll be able to turn up the volume so I can hear the music and the fireworks! Haha

The traffic jam and the crowd is a pain, but being just there in downtown and being surrounded by the most amazing fireworks is an unforgettable experience and I would not miss it. You can see it from a distance, but that's not much different from seeing it on tv. You cannot hear the music, you cannot see the fountain, which are also part of the show. The rainbow color show last year completely amazed me and I know for a fact you could not see the colors with the same rainbow intensity from a distance. It is just really 3D when you are there, and the explosions are above you all over. edited by dentro on 30/12/2012

Yeah, you can cuz you can see the top half of the building. But They will be doing a live streaming of the burj Khalifa ones on YouTube, this year we're going to stay in cuz they show everything.

Last year we pulled over on al khail road on our way home but the burj Khalifa ones aren't that easily viewable unless you can see the whole building. The burj al Arab ones may be easier to see from a distance.
