I know this is boring, but can't decide whether it's best to go electric or gas. Would normally choose gas every time, but unsure about using the bottled gas i.e. is it safe, does it work Ok with the cooker, or go electric with some brand I've never heard of. They're not the cheapest item, so any advice/tips would be v welcome!

I love gas hob and fan-assisted electric oven, but have neither here! Our apartment came with a rather good electric hob (is it hallogen?) - all pretty immediate heat and most importantly immediate cool-down. The old electric cooker we had in Uni Halls would only do anything if you whammed it on full power and once the stuff started burning, the only way to stop it was to take the pot off the stove! I might actually consider electric for my next "real" kitchen (one that I get to design and kit out). But for an oven, definitely get fan-assisted electric... nice even, predictable heat.

Yes go for a gas hob and electric oven. I love mine. I have 4 gas burners and 2 electric hot plates, really comes in handy when I run out of gas.

Definitely go for a gas hob and an electric oven so....when your gas runs out - you are not stuck!!!!! When we arrived we were told the ovens don't come like that it's either gas or electric not a combination of the 2 but....I can tell you - you can get them and I'd definitely recommend doing it that way.

I am an advocate of cooking by gas and love my gas cooker at home. Here though is a different story, I really do not trust the gas bottles and in some houses the bottles need to be inside which I think is just too dangerous. All IMHO. :)

I wished that id asked the same question when we arrived last year as I would never have gone for a gas oven!!! I would definately have a gas hob but an electric oven. My gas oven is awful, it constantly burns food at the bottom as the heat comes from 2 tiny holes at the bottom of the oven. I asked other friends about their ovens and they say the same thing and its not like weve all brought cheap ovens. Anyway ive learnt to live with it and keep an eye on everything thats cooking in it!!!

My personal preference is for an electric oven, but with a gas hob. I love cooking with gas on the stove top - instant heat, instant response - and wouldn't have it any other way. However, I find an electric oven more accurate and a more constant heat for baking, etc. The bottled gas goes well with the cookers, whatever option you choose, and is as safe as one could hope for in this neck of the woods. I would recommend making sure you have auto cut-off though, if you do get gas for any/all components. :)
