Sadly every profession has it's share of rotten apples and there are many vulture like journalists who will go to any length to get a juicy story. Many years ago I had the pleasure of frog marching a female reporter out of the ward where I was staff nurse. She had sneaked in to try and get a picture of a stabbed police officer posing as a distraught girlfriend!! On another occasion, we had a young family move into our cul de sac from the south of England. The mum had fled from an abusive partner and her brother had beaten him to death. Gutter press located her somehow and the rats hounded the house day and night. They came round doors to get any info they could. One neighbour threatened to turn his power hose on one lot while another "accidentally" let his huge German shepherd loose!! They evetually left when they realised that she had strong allies in her new neighbours. I just hope that they find the culprits responsible for the hacking and throw them to the mercy of grieving relatives or colleagues of fallen soldiers.

Well, GA, the thing is, according to the Murdoch spin, Rebekah Brooks (why do I want to call her Wade?) was away on holiday every single time something dubious was going on. Of course. And being the editor meant she was in no way responsible for what her employees did, cos she wasn't there, see? No, nor do I. Yes, funny that isn't it? I agree with one Guardian writer who said (roughly - can't find the quote), as editor, she was either complicit if she knew, or incompetent if she didn't. In either case she should no longer hold a position of influence.

Remember she was married to Ross Kemp and she hit him?

This is the list of victims identified so far (they include an alleged rape victim, milly dowler, the families of those murdered in 7/7 and other murder victims and the families of dead soldiers. Sick.) [url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/sep/10/phone-hacking-victims-list'>link[/url'> To be frank, I have never 'liked' the Murdochs much due to their political views and heavy handedness, but the way in which they are now protecting Rebekah Brooks pushes me over the edge. I cannot believe that this much activity can take place in a news room without the editor being aware of it. I so agree with you. Apparently RB has tried to resign twice but it wasn't accepted. Now 200 (?) people are out of a job and she's being protected. Disgraceful.

Yeah, I saw that interview last night on Sky TV. Fascinating. The idea that the death of NOTW will supposedly finish investigative journalism in the UK is -- in a word -- laughable. There is plenty of decent journalism being pursued by fine writers in the UK and it ISN'T along the lines of: "We reveal how a lapdance proves that Ash and Cheryl are back together [and we have his changed phone message on his Blackberry to prove it'>". That was in yesterday's NOTW. I can't believe how we'll cope without such ... important journalism. :\: . edited by WaxMuch on 08/07/2011

Well the opinion of ONE ex-NOTW journo may be that the purpose of tabloid journalism is to 'destroy people's lives' but not everyone shares that opinion. Here's another opinion, this time from a former deputy assistant commissioner for the Met police, "The News Of The World has done some genuine good work. We have really got to be careful here and not throw out the baby with the bathwater – and not end up without an investigative journalism in this country."

The purpose of tabloid journalism is -- in the words of one ex-NOTW journo' -- to 'destroy people's lives'. People working for this and other gutter press publications used and continue to use any and all available methods to secure their stories. Anyone allegedly innocent is collateral damage, in my humble opinion.

Waxmuch, in his statement James Murdoch said 'Many of you, if not the vast majority of you, are either new to the Company or have had no connection to the News of the World during the years when egregious behaviour occurred'. I think the vast majority of people who work at NOTW would be appalled about what has gone on. It's pretty harsh to gloat about them losing their jobs.

Nah, I want all of them to go. Including the 'foot soldiers'. A senior officer or indeed general who orders his troops to commit acts of atrocity doesn't excuse those soldiers from their culpability. No wait ... sorry, that was WWII. Oops. Cancelled your subscription for the Times then?

Although, should they not just get rid of those who were responsible?[b'> Lots of innocent people are losing their jobs here[/b'>. Plus they can simple go and register another name and start trading again the following week. If you work for a bottom-feeding company like the Screws, then you are -- by association -- a party to their actions. I do concur that there are people within News Ltd who should be getting the boot as well [Rebekah, please someone, show this woman the door!!'> but everyone from the lowest copy boy should be well aware of the rubbish being peddled by this ghastly red-top and why shutting it down is nothing short of marvellous. I have utterly no sympathy for these reptiles at all. Nobody works for the Screws..............they all work for Murdoch. Stop beating up on the footsoldiers and go for the main man.........

Having led a sheltered childhood and youth, it was only at a relatively late age that I realised that it was not nicknamed "News of the Screws" because it reported the latest about prison officers.

What they did was horrible and it probably always has been horrible. I can recall a school friend of my late mum making the headlines way back in the late 60's - it was horrible. I met her son here years later and when I said our mums were really good friends when they were young he went deathly pale - poor woman hadnt even done anything that bad but to have been in the news of the world haunted her and her family for years. I can still recall learning most of the facts of life from it, me and my pals would search the dustbins on a monday for old copies and we would hide in someone garden shed to have a read of it. That and the problem page of the womans own - blimey.
