Has anyone expereinced this? Been on and off antibiotics and antihistamines for months. Terrible pain in my eyes and head, and a bit in my ears, always congested, can't breathe easily. Back and forth to the doctor for meds and nothing is happening.

Just wondering if anyone has been through this and found a remedy? Maybe a specialist you can recommend?

Thank you.

Hi Irooni, A very traditional remedy once you do get rid of the infection is to get some 'oud' and use this in your house once in 2 weeks... (later it can be done once a month). If you aren't very fond of this or have kids in the house who might not appreciate it, do it at a time when there is nobody in the house. let it be for about half n hour before letting the house air naturally. This will get rid of the irritants in the air causing this and also the inhaled air will help clear your sinuses. This is a tried and tested remedy, works wonders. My DH hasn't complained of sinuses after suffering consistently for more than 2 years!

I use a nasal irrigation bottle rather than a neti pot. However, this, and the neti pot, only reach the frontal sinuses. There are nasal cavities which cannot be flushed w/these saline washes, nor are they reached by any nasal spray. If the inflammation is extensive, these treatments will have limited effect ... not that they shouldn't be used, they should and they should become a part of routine management, if necessary.

Ha! It mentioned the Neti-Pot :D "Regardless of what may be causing chronic sinusitis, the treatment goal is controlling inflammation and helping the sinuses to drain. The most effective first-line intervention, said Dr. Palmer, is nasal irrigation using a neti pot or saline irrigation bottle, which helps flush out mucus and any inflammatory bacteria or allergens in it. “If you took all the people who say they have chronic sinusitis in the world, and you put them all on nasal saline irrigations, a big proportion would not have any symptoms anymore,” he said."

Sincerely hope this does not apply to you, Irooni, but anyone who's been dealing w/chronic sinusitis for *years* should be aware of the following: http://www.nytimes.com/ref/health/healthguide/esn-sinusitis-ess.html Finally, after years, I'm able to 'manage' mine. If you're dealing w/a persistent infection for weeks or a recurrent infection over several months, this probably does not apply to you. But if it's something you are in a constant state of battling and have been plagued with for years despite repeated treatments, then it may be best to seek out a doc who is aware of the latest insights and approaches to managing this chronic condition.

That's true also about the AC it dries your nose out but then you produce more Gloop in your nasal passage which then cant drain away .. on my last visit to Dr Rubina _ I was feeling terrible - wobbly and felt like everything was moving when I stood still and I felt really sick .. felt awful in lifts etc and I had developed water in my inner/middle ear because of the sinus infection and thats where the steroids come in .. But its seems to have stopped - I still get a spinning motion when standing ...sometimes .. not all the time now though .. so I suppose its getting better :) edited by bbcb on 08/11/2011

The salt water spray is only used as a nasal cleanser before other sprays that you use. A/C is also a big factor in sinus problems. My sinusitis and ear infection turned to vertigo which was awful. Have sympathy with anyone who has these problems.

I feel your pain .. this is my 6th month with terrible sinus problems .. a friend scared me to death telling me that her DH 's sinuses caused a really bad infection and he had to have a brain op ...I think they removed a tumor or similar and she says it was caused by the sinuses - I asked the doc and she said only in very rare cases .. I have probably spent 5-6 years with sinusitus but thought it was hayfever etc .. My colds and throat infections were terrible .. I am a fit person .. exercise regularly and drink although I dont smoke . I have Isomar nasal spray - that too is salt water and in my case does NOTHING ... I have flixonase which I use in the evening I am taking 500g Ciprobay 2 a day which is supposed to tackle everything .. & Clarinase 1 a day which is better when the flixonase starts to hurt .. Rhinocort is also very good as a nasal spray when the flixonase is too much I also am now taking gupisone 20 which is a steroid ..I suffered a bad reaction because I didnt read the destructions ... took it before food rather than 30 minutes after .. and to be honest .. its getting a bit better .. I have cut out wheat ... totally and milk .. as I am lactose intolerant and have a wheat allergy .. I can now breathe through one nostrel and can tolerate bending down but the headaches and pain under my eyes has decreased .. I massage my face about twice even three times a day .. Wish you better - Medcare for me has been fab - Dr Rubina x Good luck x

I've had a lot of friends swear by using a "Neti-Pot" for chronic sinus infections. you can buy them at the pharmacy and it is specifically for flushing out the sinuses. I've had several friends tell me that it changed their life --

I am a chicken! Don't think I can handle acupunture. Thanks Claire, I will call Dr. Baghat. Kavsmum, I will try the sprays have them at home, but the doctor never prescribed it. I feel better knowing that others have been through this. I honestly felt like I was somehow over reacting to the pain, its just sinuses after all! It has over taken my life at the moment. edited by Irooni on 07/11/2011

Hi, I had this problem. Had headaches, painful face, eyes hurt and difficulty breathing. Went to the doctors and she diagnosed acute sinusitis. She prescribed 2 nasal sprays 1 was Ocean Spray which is basically salt water. You spray each nostril once then half hour later a spray called Otrivine which was amazing. Also had an ear infection and had to have the wax taken out as well. Hope it gets better soon.

I have, in the past, struggled with sinus infections and they really hurt so I know how you feel. sounds like you need a really big bumper antibiotic to clear it once and for all. If I were you I'd get to an ENT specialist. Dr Bhagat at the International Medical Centre on al Wasl Road is really good. Hope you feel better soon. xx
