PREPARING FOR JOB OFFER & RELOCATION FROM THE US

Hello everyone,

I’m about to receive a job offer with a company in Dubai. They just asked for my references, and then I’ll have the official offer sometime soon after. So I’m trying to go ahead and prepare as best as I can.

I’m a 42-year-old woman, originally from Atlanta, but currently live in Seattle. I’m married (no children) but my husband will be staying in the US for many months while finishing a work contract, so I’ll initially be moving on my own. I’m well traveled and have visited Dubai several times over the past 10 years, so I’m completely comfortable with making the move. I’m mainly looking for tips, tricks, and suggestions on things you wish you’d known or done before moving and before accepting a job offer.

CATS:
The biggest hurdle is that we have 6 cats (I know, I know… don’t judge me :) I can’t even believe I have that many!). I’ve read that one person can only sponsor 2 cats per year.
QUESTION 1 – Do you know of a service or 2 people in Dubai that can be paid to “sponsor” 2 cats per person, so I can bring all 6 at once? I can pick up 2 upon arrival, and the other people can pick up 2 each and then hand them over to me afterwards. Suggestions?

JOB OFFER:
This would be a “Director of Communications” in the corporate office for a major company with over 30,000 employees.
QUESTION 2 - Is there anyone here I can touch base with when I receive the details of the offer to help advise if it sounds good or if I should counter-offer. And it would be great to know if there are any additional things I should ask for during negotiations that I might not be aware of are standard or available in Dubai. So far some things they've mentioned are Salary, Housing, Vacation Days, Medical, Education (but I don't have children), Round trip business class ticket once a year.

DOCUMENTS:
QUESTION 3 - I read online that I’ll need to get my documents attested, is this something I’ll need to do on my own, or will the company in Dubai handle the whole process for me? Also, are there any additional documents or things you found later on you needed, or wished you had done before moving?

LIVING:
I’ll be looking to rent close to the Airport & City Centre. I’ve read quite a few blogs on things to watch out for when negotiating a rental, so I think I feel prepared. But the biggest concern will be my cats.
QUESTION 4 – In the US there is a limit of 2 cats per rental, but no one ever knows how many I have, because the cats are so aloof and not as noticeable as dogs would be. Will I find it hard to rent in Dubai with 6 cats? Or should I try to stay low key by not telling the landlord the full amount that I have? (sorry, I’m not trying to be shifty, just looking for the best solution).

I’m open to any suggestions or ideas you might be able to offer guidance on. Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Thank you dogmom55, I think I have found a solution! I spoke with a rep from British Airways and I believe I'll be able to book my Charlie 14 days out as cargo- and keep it around $1100 (USD). That is much better than the other estimates I received. I'm still hoping to figure out the import end myself to save money, but if not, I'll be using DKC. I checked about flying shihtzus in the summer and because the flight will leave in the evening from the US, and arrive into Dubai in early morning hours....it will be ok to fly him in the summer. Any other advice you all have will be appreciated! Thanks so much!

Contrarymary: We used a company called Snoopy Pets Dubai to move our girl from Kuwait to Dubai. They did an excellent job, but admittedly we had them handle all the paperwork, etc. http://www.snoopypets.com I've also seen quite a few people recommend DKC Veterinary Clinic as they handle relo's as well www.dkc.ae/what-we-do/global-relocations/pet-exports and a woman named Linda Tedd has been recommended a number of times. I don't know her but if you search Linda Tedd Dubai she does have a Facebook page so maybe you could send a message to her that way to see if she could help? (BTW, you've probably already addressed this but just in case, I know some of the US airlines also have (or at least they did a few years ago) restrictions on pets flying between certain dates due to the heat. When we originally took our 2 to Kuwait, Delta/KLM wouldn't fly pets into the Middle East between June and October 15th. But, that could've changed in the meantime as well.)

Hi MaryCatherine and dogmom55, I also read Saudi has some regulations....a friend will be moving there in August to teach and is taking her two large dogs with her, who do qualify as "guard dogs". My 15 pound piece of fluff....is not such a guard dog. :) It is going to be pricey....but at this point...I've talked to so many airlines- many who won't fly shihtzus at all because of their snub noses...possible breathing issues. (7 airlines have policies that say no snub nosed breeds), some only allow them in cabin (which is not an option in the UAE) and the few that do allow it-- require you to go through a pet relocation company because of the "rules and regulations". When I have called the main ones that everyone says are great- KLM and Lufthansa- I'm told that I cannot book cargo or arrange cargo flights--a professional freight mover or pet relocator has to do it. I have seen a few posts from other women who say it is not a big deal.....and usually I'm not one to back down from a challenge...but I am truly at my wit's end. The estimates I've gotten range from 3400 USD to 4500 USD. What I really need and want...is just for a pet relocator to book the cargo passage for me and let me do all the leg work. I'd be happy to pay them to do this, to save some money all around. If anyone has any suggestions- I'd be ever so grateful! Thank you!

Most animals travel in the cargo hold. KLM still allows the pet to fly as excess baggage which is much cheaper than cargo rates. Call KLM direct.

Oh you are right contrarymary. Dubai will only now allow them to come in as cargo. I completely forgot about this. And you are right, it's VERY expensive. Flying to Qatar really isn't an option as driving from there to Dubai you must go through Saudi Arabia and that would be difficult at best if not impossible. I had heard from someone that does international pet relocations that Saudi is now only allowing in dogs for "protection or hunting." I can't vouch for that, though.

Thank you dogmom55 and marycatherine, Perhaps the rules have changed in the last couple of years? I would be all set if our small dog were able to fly in cabin with us.....but every airline I've talked to and the UAE government website clearly states that all live animals must enter the UAE as manifest cargo. We even considered for a moment flying into Qatar (they don't have the same cargo rules) and driving to Dubai....but I would imagine that might be breaking rules of some sort and I don't want to do that.

I agree with MaryCatherine. We used KLM for our 2 dogs and they were fantastic. They have phenomenal facilities in Amsterdam which I'm assuming would be your layover point if flying from Detroit. It's been a couple of years since we've flown our dogs with them, but unless they've changed their rules in the meantime, we were able to fly 2 large labs for $200 apiece as excess baggage where they were on the same flight as we were.

Contact KLM airline. They are the best airline IMHO for pet friendly relocations and pricing especially if you are on the same flight. (Excess baggage ).

I'm hitting many roadblocks trying to get him to Dubai with us without spending a zillion dollars. Can you share what airline/freight or pet relocation services you used and how it worked for you? Thanks so much Mary:)

I would like to dispel the myth that it's difficult and you need lots of paperwork to import animals to the UAE. When I was importing my dogs I kept reading that it's really hard and and you really should get a company to do it. I decided to go it alone anyway and it was really not difficult at all. Most of the process is done online before you even leave your country. And clearing them when they arrived took approximately 1 hour - most of that is because they have to come from the terminal to the freezone! Edited to add: by doing it myself I saved around $3000 for 3 dogs! Hello there! We will be moving to Dubai in August with our 15 pound shihtzu. I want to do the export on my own (and possibly the import) but I'm having a difficult time with the airlines. They have rules that require a freight (or pet relocation service) company to arrange the shipping of the dog through manifest cargo. Or....I'm having a hard time finding an airline that will even fly him at all because he is of the snub nosed breeds...or they won't do it in the summer. Could you possibly share what airline you used etc? Although we are in Seattle at this time, we will be flying from Detroit/Cleveland area. Thanks so much Mary

When looking at properties, I would recommend you find one that allows pets. If you are looking for an apartment, there are some places that do not allow pets but don't worry as there are lots of places and landlords that don't mind. It is just that if you find out later that they are not allowed it will cause a lot of trouble for you. Good luck with your move and I hope you enjoy your new life over here.

Hello! I am also 42 and just relocated here :o) We brought our dog over. I hired DKC to handle all of the import stuff and I hired a US company to work with them and handle the export stuff. I can't tell you how much this helped me out! They collected my dog at the airport, they had booked her travel for me, they updated me along the way, DKC collected her at the airport here and took her through customs, and then they delivered her to the apartment. There is a lot of paperwork to be done when moving here - for you and for them - so I suggest hiring companies to take care of them. You will have to have your documents attested and such. That is a process and some companies do take care of it - ours did. You need to ask them about this up front. We only looked at apartments that were pet friendly so that would be my recommendation. What I do know is cats are a lot more welcomed by most than dogs. Best of luck with your move!!!

Hi, I am also from Georgia. I moved here a little over a year ago. We brought one dog with us, but a good place to reach out to about the cats is DKC veterinary clinic. They handle relocation of pets and they are a great vet to have here. My advise on the job offer - make sure the housing is at least 125,000 DHS a year or more. A 2-bedroom will run you about this much and even more depending on where you want to live. Of course make sure they give medical and make sure the pay is worth the move out here. Dubai is an expensive city to live in and your money can go fast. The round trip ticket and vacation days are pretty standard here. The vacation days also depend if you work for a public or private company. Get your documents attested in the USA. It will be much cheaper and easier. Dealing with service people here is a nightmare. Big language barrier. But make sure you do this at least 2-3 months before you have your move date. It takes time to send them to each place to get stamped. Living - It just depends on what you like. If you like the hustle and bussel of downtown living, then downtown and the Marina is nice. (But there is always traffic) If you like to be away from all that, then I would suggest Mirdif, Motor City, Sports City, Arabian Ranches, Silicon Oasis, Falcon City. They are all about 20 mins from downtown but minus the traffic and easy to get in and out of. Hope this helps a little. Oh and don't expect any southern hospitality here.. :(

I recently imported pets into Dubai and we could only import 2 per passport. Here is a link to the requirements from the ministry. It's actually really easy to do as its done online, but with 6 you will need to find other people! http://www.moew.gov.ae/assets/5064985a/pet-import-permit-dogs-and-cats.aspx

Hi Seattle I have 4 cats here! I suggest you join the Bin Kitty Collective group on Facebook. They are the Dubai cat lovers! There are a few ladies on there who actually work in pet relocation as their business and they can advise you if you ask your question there. Good luck with your move :)

Hi Seattle Welcome to (almost) Dubai. For importing your furry friends i have no idea, so I won't try to give you advice. Best of luck bringing your babies though! Is it possible for your husband to import 2 when he arrives? For job offer, always try to counter offer, whats the worst that can happen! For Documents you should start attesting your papers in USA. Its much easier to start while you're there. There's a whole process of getting it notarized, stamped by USA Foreign affairs, stamped by UAE Embassy WITHIN the USA, then when you move here you get it translated, then stamped by foreign affairs, and sometimes stamped by internal affairs. Its a bit of a task but what can you do! Without getting this done you can't get a work permit, and without a work permit you cant start you job, and won't get paid. For Living: Look in downtown, business bay, Festival City, DIFC. Those are your most modern/ "western" areas near the city center and airport. There are other, and cheaper neighbourhoods close by but they don't have the same amenities and may have problems with pests etc. As for apartment with kitties, perhaps its best to have a don't ask don't tell mentality. A lot of people are not too pet friendly here and may decide on another tenant if they know before hand. Also chances are you will never meet your landlord as everything is done through an agency here. Best of luck!
