Holding hands is all right. Emiratis do it all the time. I like seeing this, actually. Any kissing in public should be amongst the parents and their children, hehe.

Sara_2 As you are new and great you are asking for guidelines, best advice would be remember this is not our country and not to expect we can behave in the same manner as we may do in our own home country, we are welcomed foreigniers here. Expat women recently had a lsit of guidlines on the home page i am sure it is somewhere if you had a look on this website. This you may also find helpful and introduces you to U A E local life is The Jumeriah Mosque, beside Spinneys/The One Store in Jumeriah 1, gives talks on various on the way of life in the U A E and how one is expected to behave living here ( even if you are not Muslim) in the U A E . Maybe you could look it up on google and get times of talks , they are excellent and very valuable. If you decide to go along ,yYou need to have your shoulders covered ( no low top) and sleeves at least near your elbow and covered skirit /trousers to at least below your knee and also take a scarf to cover your head for when you enter the mosque. also go to a good book shop and ask for a book of information about living in Dubai and then read it. Mosque well worth a visit and when you more settled go along to the cultural centre. Make the most of the Cultural experience . :)

I've only ever seen one topless woman sunbathing here, it's so disrespectful. I sunbathe topless myself if I'm in a country where it's permissable (ages since I've been to one!) but to do it here is outrageous! I saw a nude woman doing yoga poses on the end of the pier during Ramadan - when JASC was still open.

I complained to a hotel lifeguard about a thong wearing woman at the pool. I'm not Muslim and I'm not a prude, but I was offended as was a Muslim woman at the pool with her two kids. The lifeguard told me he wouldn't say anything to the young woman because she was Iranian. Huh? Don't understand that response, but I do understand that she'd be in a heck of a lot of trouble if news (or heaven forbid a pic) of her attire ever got back to Iran! I wonder how anyone would know what nationality someone is by looking at them!!!! maybe the lifeguard knew her personally. He did after he'd seen her in a thong!!! I'm a thong wearing woman.....but being Australian we wear them on our feet ;)

sara, its NOT that big of a deal. Here's the basics. If you are not married you want to be a little careful BUT my husband and I hold hands and have our arms around eachother often etc. We don't kiss EVER in public unless we are saying goodbye at the airport but then only on the cheek. Just stick to the basics and use good judgement and you will be fine.

My recommendation is that you don't do any PDA, especially if you aren't local and you aren't married. Better safe than sorry and in jail! Not worth the risk. You might find that a little restraint in public leads to a little more excitement when you get home ;)

I don't like PDA's wherever i am, i was on a flight from Palma to Zurich once and this young swiss couple were.... well they may as well as well have just got down to it, as they were so close to the act anyway, i had my son who was 6 at the time with me and i was disqusted, anyway i said something, like can you not wait untill you get home and the bloke said to me, you are only jealous because you are old and not getting any! I burst out laughing ! so disrespectful! well im pregnant at mo so im obviously getting something;) Really though people should be aware of the rules here, I think they should get a leaflet at the airport , I saw a topless woman on the Atlantis beach last year and the guard didn't say anything! she was very lucky no one took exception! Gawd that takes the biscuit!! Not getting any and the numpties can see that you are obviously pregnant?? Some people are such idiots aren't they? :D

I love PDA and I hold DH hands when we are out. I think people should to it more often and I have seen many local couples holding hands here. I understand that we should respect the local culture, but the world would be a sad place without the hugging and kissing. I also love seeing couples kissing, I think is magical and beautiful and says everything about their relationship and passion. Maybe I'm too romantic... I'd rather my child see love than war! Superlike! My other half and me are always holding hands and the ocassional peck is lovely. I love how his face brightens up when he gets an unexpected peck on the cheek/neck/lips. My fav is when he kisses my forehead. Been here forever, not been to jail yet! Of course we have to be sensible and be aware of where we are, but its okay if a few kids (including my own) see us holding hands as opposed to seeing couples oblivious and ice cold to their partner's existence. Had very long good bye hugs at the airport. As long as one is not displaying sexual feelings I really see nothing wrong in a happy couple walking along holding each other's hands. edited by summerdream on 19/01/2011 Ditto been here forever too and haven't been arrested, I think as long as it's not offensive it's ok.

LOL - I get the holding hands - yes its nice, seeing other people hold hands looks nice too. Its quite romantic. anything else though - get a darn room or get me a bucket! About hugs - i'm sure common sense has part to play. Like I think its fine at the airport. But just standing in line at the shop - errr prob not, rightly so.

glad i haven't had lunch yet, pda...one of my pet peeves and it don't matter where. you can hold hands, its not culturally wrong, nor is it really pda. I'm sure most people don't mind and its ok. just keep everything else for some place else. Really, nobody needs to see you kiss, you love each other blah blah so what. And I can never understand how oblivious you can be to other people. Surely while you're ''busy''.....even if its a bar.....you can't not know you're in someone elses face?? Don't get it. Oh and something has gone wrong - saw two topless sun bathers at the beach too (this was a while a few months ago) IF thats not for attention, or done on purpose I don't know what is. Nobody is that ignorent. Are they?
