I just came home to find dog poop on the couch. I have had my dog for over three years now and not even once has she done this before. She had peed on the couch few times but this is the first time that she has pooped. Strangely enough she ran to the door to greet me and was not sorry at all. I got so mad I was screaming at her and hitting the floors with my slippers .The worst part is that I took her for a very long morning walk four hours ago!!!

take her to the vet, it c ould be something, or nothing. Yep...if it's nothing physical/medical, at the very least a vet will give you some more practical advice on how to deal with it.

Haven't read all the posts but I have no doubt that one of my 'girls' will poo upstairs if she is annoyed (usually if we have left the house without her). If I am going out for more than an hour I leave them in the kitchen for the duration as otherwise there might be plenty of packages for me to come home to. When me moved here my DH went a.head of us and it was a month before the girls saw him. For a full week, every time they got an opportunity they did a pee on his side of the bed!!! They never had done that before or since and I have no doubt that it was a little punishment for him for leaving them. Dogs don't generally soil in their sleeping or eating area as they know its not pleasant. I feel very strongly that some dogs pee/poo as a way of showing their annoyance/upset at something their owner has done!!! Finally, I did read recently that scientists now believe that dogs are more like humans than monkeys and that they are a lot more in touch and in tune with humans than ever though before. May sound like nonsense to some but I for one believe it ;) edited by delvin on 10/10/2011 O believe it too. My dog is such a good girl and usually I have no problem with her around the house. She is almost 8 years old and not a puppy to need potty training . She might be punishing me again !!!

One of my dogs(out of 3) does pee indoors even if left alone for 1-2 hours....!! We boiled it down to him hating being alone with out human company...so we started leaving the telly with surround sound on wen maid and us all are out...strangely it is working!! fingers and toes crossed! I really like to try that and I hope that is works . I'll do it tomorrow as she has repeatedly pooped in the floor ,last night and tonight :(

Anytime my dog was left alone for more than 4 hours(which was rare) she would pee on her pampers puppy pads then rip them to shreds she just does not like being alone! She would then ignore me for the rest of the night. Woof daycare is brilliant for them and it will give you peace of mind during the day. I really do think that it is a really long time for your fur baby to be alone:-(

oh dear, my typing sounded rude with all the spaces between, that is not how I typed it though so excuse me :) Agree with JShepherd about getting another dog for company. You will now have to dogs who are left alone for 11 hours a day in an apartment. :(:(...Homely Petz is a very good idea as well as Dog Walk for day care..your dog will be very happy :)

How about getting someone to let her out midday for a walk and a toliet break? There is no way my dogs could go that long without needing the loo..... Homely petz do a walkies service where you can sign up on a monthly basis and they will come take them out for half an hour I think every week day, don't think it was that expensive either? By adding another dog it may help with loneliness but you could end up with more mess and fighting,if left alone for a long time without supervision :(

If you do a search online you can purchase "pee pads" that you can train your pup to use if needed. Some even have artificial grass. If pup can't access the outdoors by itself or with a dog walker - this may help with the time constraints you face in your household. I don't know how old your pup is, but older (like younger dogs and me) can't hold it as long as we once could. HTH edited by marycatherine on 09/10/2011

11 hours is an awfully long time for any dog to be alone in a house :(. She has just had 10 days of company with her all the time and I bet she enjoyed it immensley. Dogs are pack animals not solitary. It "could be'' that that is her frustration on being alone again. You could try doggy day care a couple of times a week and possibly have someone come in around 2 to take her out....does she have a doggy door so she can get out if she has to go to the bathroom? I have been thinking about adopting another dog so that she wont be lonely . Doggy daycare is not a bad idea too. I line in an apartment and no ,there is no doggy door :(

I think you all (except for Green-ish) misunderstood what I'm saying...I don't humanize dogs at all, all I'm saying is they act out! I think dogs should be treated like dogs and not humans.. I hope this helps "http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/separationanxiety.htm"

Sorry, dogs aren't that smart (none of them) that they do things for revenge. Check any changes in food or home circumstances, they are the two biggest triggers of changes in behavior (including elimination). Is there someone new in the house, have you changed the food recently, have you changed the dog/person routine recently? If none of the above apply, go to the vet and try to determine why this behaviour has emerged. Punishing the pet (or scaring it by chasing it around with slippers) will accomplish NOTHING except instill fear into you actually entering the home. Why not chase an 18 month old child around with a slipper because it didn't go potty correctly? Same same/. Dogs r very smart, and we should never underestimate their intelligence...it's ABC behavior when a dog is upset wit u they do wrong things around the house. If they weren't smart then how come they work wit the blind, or rescue people, or worked wit police? And the fact that it was the part where Khatoon sits at is a sign that the dog knew what she was doing. Is ur dog used to being alone? ... It may be in your wording Jesskerz, but you are making it sound like you think the dog actually has a human-like thought process about all of this. In the dog's 'mind' all it knows is that things are quieter and more lonely in the house than they have been for a week or so and that's stressful for the animal. Yes, they make mistakes/have accidents when they are under stress but it is not a conscious decision. The dog does not (cannot) think, "She left me alone so I will poop on the couch." It's much more basic, primal and stress-level related than that. Dogs are brilliant in rescue, police work, as companion animals and customs animals etc etc because they have amazing trainers who understand dog behaviour and who train them to follow very simple, very specific cues. It's amazing, but it's not rocket science and it's not because the dogs are canine Einsteins. edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011

Exactly what I'd suggest Sue. Especially in a wee (needy!) breed like a Pom...the poor dog needs some 'pack' interaction during those 11 very long, lonely hours. I also think this accident happened because she is not happy being alone again. Again I stress it's not on purpose, and I agree that dogs do not seek revenge. we have to be very careful (for our own sanity) to avoid humanising them and their behaviours. Yes, they are smart, but they are DOGS and think like DOGS.

Sorry, dogs aren't that smart (none of them) that they do things for revenge. /. OK, my dog actually does pee on beds when she's p*ssed off with a person, like if you don't take her for a walk, she'll pee on your bed (not because she hasn't had the chance to pee, she has a dog door)... I wouldn't call it smart though lol

I had few of my relatives visiting for 10 days and they gave her alot of attention. Basically she was never alone at home because of them. She had pooped in the past in the house to show me that she is sad or lonely after my folks have left . But it was the first time that she had done in on the couch . And she did it exactly on the part that I always sit at .Her routine has not changed and she is on her old diet . I cant think of anything else but to think that she is getting back out me because the guests are gone and she is more alone in the house now .Just to clarify , I did not chase her with the slipper , I hit the floor in front of her with the slipper .I love her so much and hate being mad at her ,but had to react in some way to show her what she did was wrong.
