Hello!

Any recommendations for good stores? I was at Dubai mall this morning and all the clothes were either too small ( think skinny models), had terrible clingy fabric which would show off all your hanging bits or were ridiculously expensive ( I am NOT paying $100 for a top!!!)

Any suggestions for decent, good quality clothes that won't break the bank?

MAX has an extended sizes section, the clothes are not that bad actually, and now the have a promotion spend 150 dhs get a 30 dhs voucher. You can also try Carrefour, they have lots of branded clothes (with the tags cut) at very cheap prices.

Thank you all SO much! Lots of shopping days coming up :) Thanks Waxmunch. Will give it a go and try and get over my fear of having things tailored :)

I get loads of my clothes from a UK shop called Yours. You can buy online and I use my Aramex shop and ship account for them to send to me. However, they do send internationally to UAE as far as I know. http://www.yoursclothing.co.uk/

LOL! No need to worry about being graphic. :) I only get my trousers done with a 'half-leg' lining; the lining goes from the waist to just below mid-thigh and in fact, I think it makes the trousers feel better against my skin, but that's just a personal feeling maybe! I do think it makes the top-of-the-thigh part of the trousers less inclined to wrinkle [that bit where you crease when you sit down'>, but I'm always careful to 'lift' the trousers back towards my waist whenever I sit down as well [as you would if you were a guy in a suit'>. :) Despite having heard talk of him being a bit 'hit and miss' for some clients, I have never had any issues with Cliff [one of the 'alley tailors' in Satwa'> which is possibly due to the fact that he -- and his employees -- are very good at copying [and I only ever ask for things to be copied, not made from scratch'>. He's also very quick [on request'>. I had about seven tops/trousers made up for me in five days** in January [before going on holiday'>. I did pay a bit extra for the quick turnaround though. Oh, and also HAGGLE [but you should do that with any tailor'>. Always make sure that you are happy with the price, and make sure that you don't leave with your goodies unless they fit perfectly. I generally have two fittings; one for fit and the other for hems. As I said, very happy. But I've never had anything designed for me [Cliff does have pattern books though -- worth checking them out -- and he is an effective/quick measurer too'>. ** This is probably the minimum time you'd want to have something made, if that makes sense, because it's important to let natural materials like cotton/linen 'drop' so that the hem won't be uneven. Cliff will hang the gear between fittings so this happens naturally. :)

WaxMuch, which tailor did you use? I've heard some good things about Dream Girls, but am unsure which tailor to use. I'm guessing that if you're not getting a copy made it can be a bit of a hit and miss thing. I'd love to get some trousers made and will remember the tip of having them lined. Does that not get a bit hot and sweaty? Sorry to be a bit graphic ;)

This may be out of your way but for non-clingy stuff: you may want to check out the clothes at the Sharjah Souk. They have lovely tunic styles in cotton, silk and chiffons.

Have you thought about checking out a tailor in the Satwa district? I get most of my clothes made there -- lovely linen separates [but then, I'm a bit older than you!'>, trousers/tops/etc, all copied from favourite designers -- which are much cheaper than the shops out here. And they look better too. :) Apologies to the OP for hijacking..... Wax Much, may I ask you where you purchase your linen for trousers and what type is used (say do you use a linen-mix)? Last summer I brought some linen from Regal - relied on the help of the sales guy - what he sold me was apparently what "everyone" is using - however found it really thin and very creasy - not good quality at all. The trousers I had made, although copied from a favorite pair, were so disappointing due to the fabric. Would really like to have another try this year but would appreciate your advice, thanks! I actually did buy from Regal [!!'> and I know what you mean; there were a couple of linens I purchased which were a bit thin, but I had the trousers lined with silk taffeta [falls better that way'> and just put up with the tops being a little crinkly. ;) The tops were loose 'singlet-style' long [to mid thigh'> and quite 'flowy' so in fact, the crinkles didn't really bother me on them. As for the other linens, I haven't had a problem with them at all. I only get them dry-cleaned though; perhaps that's a factor? I bought several yards of many colours: two x navy, one beige, 2 x white, hot pink, purple, chocolate, black and royal blue. I'm really happy with what I bought from Regal [I checked out a few shops and it seemed they had the best-quality and widest range of colours'>. Sorry I can't be of more help. :)

I think the selection here for 'big girls'is dire, but I found the same when I lived in the UK. I miss the plus sized boutiques from back home a lot. Want to have some things made, but am unsure what tailor to use and also which shop to buy the fabrics from.
