Hi. I have searched the forum and found numerous recommendations for speach therapists. I was wondering if anyone has used any of them for a child with a lisp. Also any ideas of how often my daughter would have to attend and cost per session. I know some people may think cost should be irrelevant, however she is also recieving treatment for a squint and with insurance not covering these cost is a factor. Obviously we will find the money to get her treatment, there is no question about that!
Many Thanks

My almost 4 year old also has a slight lisp. As much as I find it cute, I do try and work on his sounds and his tongue and mouth movements. Try simple sound making exercises....jolly phonics is a good method to teach your child sounds too. I know Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre has Speech Therapists who you can refer your child to....I think the rate is 360AED an hour too, but I'm not 100% sure. If you want a professional opinion and even ideas as to what to do do at home, they'll guide you in the right direction.

In my experience parents may be aware that there is something not quite right with their child's speech but cannot always identify the problem. That's why I think it is worth getting a professional opinion. As parents we typically hear the message of what are children are saying, not necessarily paying attention to the way that they say it. But yes, I agree with you that therapy may not be necessary at this age. I would maybe be more pro-active with 4 year olds. 4 year olds in British Curriculum schools get into reading and writing very quickly. Children with a lisp may not make a clear difference between 's' and 'th' and therefore do not know which sound to write. edited by plum2 on 20/09/2011

My sister is a speech therapist in the Uk and her view is that a 3 year old with a lisp does not necessarily need speech therapy as more often than not the lisp will disappear with age and is just a developmental thing. My 4 year old also lisps and this summer my sister still did not recommend therapy as she said my daughter is still young..You obviously need to do what you think is right for your own child but just thought would pass on a different view...

Where do you live and does your daughter attend nursery/School? With this info you may get more advice about where to go. Depending on the lisp, most good speech therapists should be able to give you a home programme as this is something you should be able to work on at home. Good on you for getting onto it early. It's one of those habits that parents often think is 'cute' but the longer it goes on the harder it can be to correct. Therapy sessions cost from about 360 an hour up. Some centres will do shorter sessions for younger children. Thanks for your reply. I have been made to feel neurotic at times by my husband when I have mentioned DH eye that wondered when tired and the fact thet her pronunciation of her s sounds like she has too much saliva in her mouth. Had her eyes checked in UK and very slight squint diagnosed, which if left would get worse! That's why I want to get her speach checked now as I am going to trust my gut from now on! We live in Al Bada'a (near Emirates bank on Al wasl). 360 per hour sounds better than I was expecting! Thanks again.
