Yesterday, my DH went to a large grocery store in the Meadows and bought, among other things, raspberries. Went to eat some last night - they were completely moldy. This morning, DH went to the same large grocery store in the Meadows and bought small potatos. Today, I went to cook with them only to find that they are moldy.

Is there anyone to complain to, besides the useless managers at the store? It is a major inconvenience to get ready to make a soup, for example, and find the new potatos are already moldy. Not to mention that my DH doesn't like to keep receipts and for that reason, we can't even return them!!!!

Dark, plus warm plus moist = mould. It has been my experience that one needs to inspect produce thoroughly then open any plastic bags/containers ASAP upon purchasing. With the humidity that is just the way it is. In summer especially. I would suspect that it is close to a miracle to receive berries all the way from Holland without some mould, which can develop within an hour. Raspberries in particular have their own inherently dark 'chamber'. If it doesn't rot, there is something wrong with it.

Erk! That's disgusting and it's now my local store, so thanks for the head's up. I will be more diligent when it comes to buying fresh produce from there.

Would you believe I just got back from Spinneys (I know, but it's convenient!) and I had a quick look at the bags of potatos that my DH bought the other day - and the first one I picked up was moldy!!! I told a worker there, but he just sort of hemmed and hawed and put the bag to the side. I told him that he should go through all of them to make sure the rest aren't moldy too, but he didn't look like he cared that much and went back to doing what he was doing. Disgusting!

The worst for me has to be the Union Co op (new one in Al Barsha) It sounds like they need to learn from the Safa Park branch, particularly if you go early in the morning. I get all my fruit and veg there because I find it the best place to go. That said, I don't tend to buy the pre-packed stuff there because strangely enough there doesn't ever seem to be much of it.

Given the climate........it's total madness to buy prepacked produce........the fruit or veg just stew in the packaging.

The worst for me has to be the Union Co op (new one in Al Barsha) I bought some pre packed cherries, the pack ended up containing a few good ones on the top and when you remove the cling film the entire lot was mouldy and disgusting, same with the pre packed peppers, displayed in a way that you wont see the rot underneath!! I was fuming and have tried calling several times, but its almost imposibble to get to speak to a Manager..

I've always found that fruit & veg is best from the smaller chain supermarkets, they seem to turn over their stock quicker so more trips to the market means fresher stock.

Anondubai, where on earth do you shop and how do I get there??? I go to a mix of supermarkets for produce but I almost never get produce from Spinney's, Choitram's, etc.

I bought C4 apples a few days ago and I always choose carefully. However, I still had to throw several in the bin because bruises had developed. They must lift them as high as they can and drop them onto the display. The one I did have had hardly any moisture - it was vile!

I think the handling/storage of produce probably has a lot to do with it. For example shopping at Carrefour the other week, the apples were freezing cold and had tons of condensation on them. Why would they refrigerate apples then put them out on the shelves? Probably because they were hot from transportation, cooled down to seem more fresh, then put out in room temperature...that can't be good for the quality of the food.

I find the quality of fruits and vegs in general has really suffered in the last few weeks. We like to do weekly shopping trips and most fruits/vegs although they look good when you buy them, do not survive the 5-6 days. I am not talking about something as delicate as raspberries, I am talking about goods that in other countries where I have lived, easily last 1-2 weeks! It is the poor handling in this country aggravated by the hours they are left to stand in containers in the sun.

Same problem with raspberries last week. Opened them to make salad and they were awful. Would not be so bad if they were not soooooo expensive. I think I will take them back the next time it happens. Maybe the source can change something with packaging, blueberries and strwaberries appear not to suffer as much.

when I had similar problems, I went back the day after, I gave back some pieces of them ( few raspberries) he gave me a new one and the guy working in the vegetable section told him that I'm regular customer... I'm talking about Le marche' at arabian ranches: they are very kind!

On all veg that's imported and prepacked you really need to check.... Bought some cherries the other day which were 35AED and when i went to eat them they were mouldy.

We had the same problem a few weeks ago with the same brand of supermarket but at Mercato. Won't ever bother shopping there again.
